Sandler sets Razzie record: 11 worst-movie noms (omg!)

In this image released by Sony Pictures, Adam Sandler portrays both Jill, left, and Jack in a scene from "Jack & Jill." Sandler shattered the record for most nominations ever at the Razzies, an Academy Awards spoof that singling out the worst movies of the year. His 11 nominations Saturday included worst actor for both ?Jack and Jill? and ?Just Go with It? _ along with worst actress for ?Jack and Jill,? in which he plays a family man and his own twin sister. SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) ? When Adam Sandler's bad, he's really bad, according to voters for the Razzies, an Academy Awards spoof that singles out the worst movies of the year.

Sandler received a record 11 nominations Saturday for the Razzies as star, producer or writer on three 2011 movies ? "Jack and Jill," ''Just Go with It" and "Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star."

That more than doubled the previous record of five Razzie nominations held by Eddie Murphy for 2007's "Norbit."

Sandler's nominations include worst actor for both "Jack and Jill" and "Just Go with It" ? and worst actress for "Jack and Jill," in which he plays a family man and his own twin sister.

Sandler also had two nominations as worst screen couple opposite Jennifer Aniston or Brooklyn Decker in "Just Go with It" and opposite Katie Holmes, Al Pacino or himself in "Jack and Jill."

As a producer, Sandler was credited with worst-picture and worst prequel, remake, rip-off or sequel nominations for both "Bucky Larson" and "Jack and Jill." He also shared in worst-screenplay nominations as a writer on both movies, and a worst-ensemble nomination for "Jack and Jill."

"It's almost karmic for someone to have made that much razz-able stuff in one year," said Razzies founder John Wilson. "He has angered someone really powerful, I would say."

Along with "Bucky Larson" and "Jack and Jill," worst-picture contenders are "New Year's Eve," ''Transformers: Dark of the Moon" and "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ? Part 1."

"Jack and Jill" led with 12 nominations, with "Transformers" second with nine and "Breaking Dawn" right behind with eight.

Razzie nominations were released on the eve of the Oscars. Winners will be announced on April Fool's Day.

For worst actor, Sandler is up against "Bucky Larson" star Nick Swardson, along with Russell Brand for "Arthur"; Nicolas Cage for "Drive Angry," ''Season of the Witch" and "Trespass"; and Taylor Lautner for "Abduction" and "Breaking Dawn."

Swardson also was nominated for worst supporting actor for "Jack and Jill" and "Just Go with It."

For worst actress, Sandler is joined by another cross-dressing actor, Martin Lawrence in "Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son." Also nominated were Sarah Palin for her documentary "The Undefeated"; Sarah Jessica Parker for "I Don't Know How She Does It" and "New Year's Eve"; and Kristen Stewart for "Breaking Dawn."

Several Oscar winners made the Razzies list, among them Cage (a best-actor winner for "Leaving Las Vegas") and Pacino (a best-actor winner for "Scent of a Woman"), who was nominated for worst supporting actor for "Jack and Jill."

Bill Condon, an Oscar winner for his "Gods and Monsters" screenplay, was among the worst-director nominees at the Razzies for "Breaking Dawn."

The group traditionally has announced its nominees the day before the Oscar nominations and its winners the night before the Oscars. But Wilson and the roughly 600 voting members for the Razzies decided to experiment with an April 1 date this time, figuring April Fool's Day was an ideal time for their mock ceremony.

"I have always wondered if we stepped slightly away from lockstep with the Oscars, what would happen," Wilson said. "We just kept hoping the Oscars would do their ceremony on April 2, but they just never did."

That 7.7-inch Toshiba tablet we saw at CES? It's called the AT270, and it runs Tegra 3

To explore NVIDIA's booth here at Mobile World Congress is to play a game of duck-duck-goose. For the most part, you'll see the Transformer Prime (the first quad-core tablet, don'tcha know) outputting video and 3D games. But look closely and you'll find something a little less expected. Hidden among all those spun metal Primes is an unannounced Toshiba-made tablet, one with an odd, in-between screen size we haven't seen it use in its Thrive line. Specifically, it's that 7.7-inch prototype we saw at CES, only the fact that it's here at NVIDIA's booth makes us think it would be too late for Toshiba to change its mind and pull the plug on this.

Certainly, it's far enough along that it now has confirmed specs. According to an NVIDIA rep, this has a 7.7-inch, 1280 x 800, Super AMOLED (!) panel, and runs NVIDIA's 1.5GHz Tegra 3 chip. And while NVIDIA isn't exactly broadcasting the name, a quick glance at the settings confirmed its current alias is the AT270, which would certainly make for a logical followup to the AT200. (A quick glance at the settings also confirms it's running ICS -- a vanilla version, at that -- but any self-respecting tech writer would know that instantly.)

It would also seem that Toshiba is feeling pretty confident about the design we saw at CES, because barely anything has changed. For starters, it's thin -- thin on the level of the 10-inch AT200. Which is to say, it's skinny in the wide world of tables, but especially so next to one of those chubby Thrives. The build quality also seems to have improved. Gone is the ridged plastic backing that makes the Thrives so recognizable, and in its place there's... more plastic. Still, it manages to not feel chintzy or poorly made -- think of the kind of finely textured plastic you'll find on the back of any Samsung Galaxy handset. Also on board: dual cameras of unknown resolutions, as well as an exposed microSD slot, volume rocker, 3.5mm headphone jack and USB socket. So there you have it. We've got spy shots below, so you can refuse to be surprised when this thing finally makes it to market.

What Pharma Can Learn From the Railroads and IBM

Train wreckPharmaceutical companies are in trouble with ongoing patent cliffs with a clear choice facing them. They can follow the path of the railroad industry which is the path most are on right now. Alternatively, they can follow the path IBM took when its future was similarly bleak. IBM demonstrated how it's possible for a large company to shift from a product-centric culture to a customer and service centered company. It's clear that pharma companies will succeed or fail based not on how many drugs they sell, but on how well their offerings improve health outcomes.

Your St. Louis Mortgage Refinance Questions Answered | Rai ...

Mortgage Refinance

Whether you live in the independent city of St. Louis, MO or you?re considering moving here, this stunning jewel of a town has much to offer. From the famous gateway arch to the St. Louis Cardinal?s baseball team, you?ll find a lot to love in this bustling, friendly atmosphere. No matter if you?re buying a home or considering refinancing into a low fixed rate, St. Louis mortgage refinance experts can help you get the information you need to make an informed decision. Here are some of the most common questions residents ask about the process of refinancing a home in St. Louis.

Advantages for First Time Home Buyers

First time homeowners often ask ?How much can I afford?? or ?Do I really have enough income to buy a home in St. Louis?? Fortunately, there are plenty of online mortgage calculators that can help you create a starting point for your mortgage refinance questions.

Home buyers can compare the differences between a fixed rate and an adjustable rate mortgage, how much you?ll save by making extra payments and how much you can afford. The mortgage refinance calculators offered by some online banks are a good place to start your research. Simply input a few basic numbers including your gross monthly income, debt/loan payments and your property tax rate and instantly see how much you could qualify for in a St. Louis home loan.

Advantages for Existing Homeowners

Existing St. Louis homeowners who are interested in locking in a lower rate can now take advantage of historically low interest rates to save money every month while lowering your monthly payments. Ask a St. Louis mortgage refinance advisor to give you a full-scale review before you decide to refinance your home loan. This free report will let you see just how much you can and how much you could reduce your monthly payment. You can also compare loans products including fixed rate and adjustable rate mortgages.

Going Beyond the Internet

Internet mortgage refinance calculators are helpful, but sometimes it?s beneficial to speak with a real person. That?s why if you have questions beyond just crunching the numbers and getting an overview of your home ownership finances, it?s a smart idea to seek out a local bank in the area concerning your mortgage refinance questions. Home loan consultants can help answer any and all questions about the local area, help you make sense of real estate terms and create a customized plan that can help you decide if a St. Louis mortgage refinance is right for you. Taking the initial steps now to become knowledgeable of the refinance process can potentially help you save hundreds or even thousands of dollars in the end.

Are you making your spring allergies worse? Five things that can aggravate your suffering

ScienceDaily (Feb. 24, 2012) ? Fruits and veggies, air filters, spring breezes, procrastination and self-medication -- each can delay relief from a stuffy nose, sneezing, sniffling or other symptoms if you're one of the more than 35 million Americans who suffer from seasonal allergies.

"People with spring allergies often don't realize how many things can aggravate their allergy symptoms so they just muddle along and hope for an early end to the season," said Myron Zitt, M.D., past president of the ACAAI. "But there's no reason to suffer. A few simple adjustments in habits and treatment can make springtime much more enjoyable."

The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) and its allergist members alert people with spring allergies to be on the lookout for these five things that can aggravate suffering.

1. Noshing on fruits and veggies -- Many people with seasonal allergies also suffer from pollen food allergy syndrome (also called oral allergy syndrome), a cross-reaction between the similar proteins in certain types of fruits, vegetables (and some nuts) and the allergy-causing pollen. One in five people with grass allergies and as many as 70 percent of people with birch tree allergies suffer from the condition, which can make your lips tingle and swell and your mouth itch. The trick is to determine which problematic produce is causing your symptoms and then avoid eating it, (although you might be able to eat it if it's peeled, cooked or canned). If you're allergic to birch or alder trees, you might have a reaction to celery, cherries or apples. If you have grass allergies, tomatoes, potatoes or peaches may bother you. Usually the reaction is simply annoying and doesn't last long. But up to 9 percent of people have reactions that affect a part of their body beyond their mouth and 1.7 percent can suffer a life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylactic shock. If you've had a systemic reaction, you should see an allergist and ask whether you should carry injectable epinephine.

2. Using the wrong air filter -- Using an air filter to keep your home pollen-free is a good idea, but be sure it's the right kind. Studies show inexpensive central furnace/air conditioning filters and ionic electrostatic room cleaners aren't helpful -- and in fact the latter releases ions, which can be an irritant. Whole-house filtration systems do work, but change the filters regularly or you could be doing more harm than good.

3. Opening your windows -- When your windows are open, the pollen can drift inside, settle into your carpet, furniture and car upholstery and continue to torture you. So keep your house and car windows shut during allergy season.

4. Procrastinating -- You may think you can put off or even do without medication this spring, but the next thing you know you're stuffed up, sneezing and downright miserable. Instead, get the jump on allergies by taking your medication before the season gets under way.

5. Self medicating -- Perhaps you're not sure exactly what's making you feel awful so you switch from one medication to the next hoping for relief. Your best bet is to see an allergist, who can determine just what's triggering your symptoms and suggest treatment.

The singer stopped by Under the Gun tattoo parlor in Hollywood last night and employee Jordan Sandoval Tweeted a shot of his work on Selena's body: a tiny little heart just under her right forearm.

"She was excited...she wasn't nervous. She is way cute," Jordan Tweeted along with the photo, adding that Gomez "took it like a champ" and didn't mention if the heart was in honor of someone in particular.

But we all know the answer to that question, don't we?

Microsoft reveals Windows 8's new logo: 'It's a window... not a flag'

Microsoft is making plenty of big changes with its Windows 8 operating system, and that has now also extended to a new logo. As explained by Microsoft's Sam Moreau in a post on the official Windows blog, the logo was created with the help of the design agency Pentagram, which posed a simple question when it began on the project: "your name is Windows. Why are you a flag?" That discussion eventually led to the four-paned window you see above, which not only looks more like a window than the previous logos, but clearly echoes the company's new Metro design language. You can see a bigger version after the break, and read the full story of its creation (along with a look back at past logos) at the source link below.

Mother of pearl tells a tale of ocean temperature, depth

ScienceDaily (Feb. 16, 2012) ? Nacre -- or mother of pearl, scientists and artisans know, is one of nature's amazing utilitarian materials.

Produced by a multitude of mollusk species, nacre is widely used in jewelry and art. It is inlaid into musical instruments, furniture and decorative boxes. Fashioned into buttons, beads and a host of functional objects from pens to flatware, mother of pearl lends a lustrous iridescence to everyday objects.

In recent years, subjecting the material to the modern tools of scientific analysis, scientists have divined the fine points of nacre architecture and developed models to help explain its astonishing durability: 3,000 times more fracture resistant than the mineral from which it is made, aragonite.

Now, in a new report (Feb. 16) in the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS), scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison show that nacre can also be deployed in the interest of science as a hard-wired thermometer and pressure sensor, revealing both the temperature and ocean depth at which the material formed.

"We found a strong correlation between the temperature at which nacre was deposited during the life of the mollusk and water temperature," explains Pupa Gilbert, a UW-Madison professor of physics and chemistry and the senior author of the new JACS report. "All other (temperature) proxies are based on chemical analyses and the relative concentration of different elements or isotopes. This could be our first physical proxy, in which the microscopic structure of the material tells us the maximum temperature and maximum pressure at which the mollusk lived."

The new study was conducted using mother of pearl from modern mollusks, but Gilbert notes that nacre is widespread in the fossil record going back 450 million years. If the techniques used by the Wisconsin group can be applied to fossil nacre, scientists can begin to accurately reconstruct a global record of ancient environments and environmental change.

"If the correlation holds, we would have a thermometer that goes back in time, a paleothermometer of how hot or cold water temperatures were when the nacre formed," says Gilbert.

The material also holds a distinctive signature-the thickness of the nacre layers -- for the water depth at which the material was assembled by a mollusk, potentially providing even more insight into environmental conditions of the present and past.

"These are two independent parameters, measured by different aspects of nacre structure," the Wisconsin physicist explains. "The maximum temperature can be measured by how disordered the nacre crystal orientations are, while the maximum pressure can be taken from the thickness of the nacre layers."

Working with UW-Madison graduate student Ian C. Olson, the lead author of the JACS report, Gilbert subjected nacre from eight mollusk species from different environments to a technique capable of mapping the orientation of nacre crystals. From the different shells, they observed uneven thicknesses, widths and angles of the crystalline "bricks" that, together with an organic mortar, are laid down by the mollusk to form mother of pearl.

"We wondered why the shells were so different and concluded that the key parameters to test were the environmental ones, including maximum, minimum and mean annual temperatures as well as maximum and minimum water pressure, which depends on water depth," says Gilbert.

Comparing the structural maps of nacre from the different mollusks and environmental data from the places where the animals were collected, Olson, Gilbert and their collaborators found an extremely high correlation between the microscopic structural characteristics of their nacre specimens and the temperature and pressure data obtained from the various environments where they were collected.

Contributing to the new study were Reinhard Kozdon and John Valley, both of the UW-Madison department of geoscience. The work was funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation.

'Idol' showing teen's fall, vomiting is no big deal

There's a reason why "Idol" hopeful Gabrielle has a trash bag in front of her -- she's sick thanks to the flu making its rounds among contestants.

By Craig Berman

"American Idol" is generally a tame show, appropriate viewing for all ages. But the group performances in Hollywood are always an exception to that feel-good atmosphere, and never more so than this year.

Group day is when ?Idol? channels its inner ?Survivor,? studying how alliances form and disintegrate, and pushing the performers to their physical and mental limits. It?s the one time where it lets the audience know how difficult and stressful it is to succeed on the show.

In addition to the usual screaming, crying and contestants failing to play well with others, this season's?week in Hollywood?also featured medical drama. Symone Black provided the first cliffhanger of the season when she fainted and fell off the stage on the Feb. 8 episode. The situation?made worse to many because it came right after DVRs cut off. (This just in: "Idol" does not care about DVR viewers.) Anyone concerned about Black?s health had to wait until the next night to find out she was OK.

That caused much outrage, as did last Thursday?s focus on singers struggling with an illness that made trash cans a hot commodity so people would have something to vomit into. In sickness and in health may apply to married couples, apparently, but not to the ?Idol? audience, according to some.

Granted, throwing up never makes good television. But?the extent of the "Idol" Plague also shows how deadly serious everyone takes the competition. The hopefuls are clearly desperate not to miss out on their big chance, even if their bodies revolt.

Was any of it a big deal? Not really, but it hearkened back to the good old days when ?Idol? could get some easy national attention by making fun of an unattractive auditioner or two. It got people talking about the show for the first time all season, and for things that in the big picture were minor issues.

Black was fine, and in fact made it back later that evening for group night. That was no surprise. Despite Steven Tyler?s initial medical diagnosis, her head did not take the brunt of the fall, the cameraman nearly caught her and it wasn?t a long drop.

Surely, the footage of her fall from grace embarrassed her. But the show has never been shy?about making teenagers cry and airing the footage, and if you think about it, that makes sense. These kids really want to succeed and will do anything to get there, even if it means sacrificing their health, sleep and self-esteem. Showing the audience that side of the competition now makes everyone realize what the eventual winner has gone through when the confetti drops in May.

Did you think "Idol" went too far showing Symone's fall and and other contestants getting so ill? Or does it all just prove how much the hopefuls want this opportunity? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Ocean microbe communities changing, but long-term environmental impact is unclear

CORVALLIS, Ore. As oceans warm due to climate change, water layers will mix less and affect the microbes and plankton that pump carbon out of the atmosphere but researchers say it's still unclear whether these processes will further increase global warming or decrease it.

The forces at work are enormous and the stakes huge, said Oregon State University scientists in an article to be published Friday in the journal Science.

But inadequate ocean monitoring and lack of agreement on how to assess microbial diversity has made it difficult to reach a consensus on what the future may hold, they said.

"We're just beginning to understand microbial diversity in the oceans and what that may mean to the environment," said Stephen Giovannoni, an OSU professor of microbiology. "However, a large portion of the carbon emitted from human activities ends up in the oceans, which with both their mass of water and biological processes act as a huge buffer against climate change. These are extremely important issues."

The interest is growing, scientists say, because nearly half of the world's photosynthesis is contributed by microbial plankton, and the process of marine carbon production and consumption is much faster than on land. A turnover of terrestrial plant biomass takes 15 years, they say, while marine turnover takes just six days.

As the ocean surface warms, evidence shows that it will become more "stratified," or confined to layers that mix less than they did in the past. This should reduce overall ocean productivity, Giovannoni said, but so little is known about the effect on ocean microbes that the implication for carbon sequestration and global warming is less clear.

Some OSU research on routine seasonal changes of microbes in the Sargasso Sea of the Atlantic Ocean suggests that different and specialized microbial communities can become more dominant when water warms.

As warmer oceans become a more long-term and global phenomenon, researchers need to know more about these microbes, and whether their behavior will amplify or reduce atmospheric carbon and the greenhouse effect.

It could be either, Giovannoni said.

"Some warming of surface waters may reduce carbon sequestration, which could cause a feedback loop to increase global warming," Giovannoni said.

"Other forces, what we call the microbial carbon pump, could cause carbon to sink into the deep ocean and be segregated from the atmosphere for thousands of years," he said. "We know both of these processes exist, but which one will become dominant is unpredictable, because we know so little about ocean microbes."

It was only two decades ago that OSU scientists discovered SAR11, an ocean microbe and the smallest free-living cell known, but one that's now understood to dominate life in the oceans, thrives where most other cells would die and plays a huge role in carbon cycling on Earth.

Microbial action also surprised scientists just recently, Giovannoni noted, when specific microbe populations surged following the Gulf Coast oil spill and cleaned up much of the oil faster than many thought possible. And some plans to "fertilize" the ocean and sequester atmospheric carbon through marine phytoplankton growth have been put on hold, he said, because it just isn't certain what would happen.

To reduce that uncertainty, Giovannoni advocates more aggressive development and implementation of marine microbial monitoring technology around the world, to add to what scientists can already learn from study of satellite images. And the field is so new, he said, that many researchers are not even comparing the same types of data or standardizing the tools they use to assess microbial diversity a problem that needs to be addressed.

Dramatic advances in DNA sequencing in recent years, Giovannoni said, should also help researchers unravel the ocean microbe mystery.

Rochester Home Building is Good, Going To Better ? The Real ...

John Eischen: Local home-building climate is good, and getting better

Posted: 02/07/2012 7:33 AM

There has been some discussion on the low number of permits pulled for new single family homes in the city of Rochester in 2011. However, just looking at one statistic does not tell the complete story of construction activity within Rochester.
The remodeling market in Rochester in 2011, while down slightly for the year, saw a 10 percent increase in permit activity in the last quarter of 2011. There were more decks built, basements finished, and additions put on homes during the last three months of 2011 than in the same period in 2010. This trend follows at the national level as well. According to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Remodeling Market Index, professional remodelers saw remodeling conditions rise to their highest level in five years during the fourth quarter of 2011. NAHB Chief Economist David Crowe says, ?We expect a modest growth in remodeling activity to continue throughout 2012.?

Last year saw a 14.6 percent increase over 2010 in the number of commercial new construction permits pulled in Rochester. But again, that single statistic does not tell the complete story.

Within those permits are new Mayo Facilities, a new Lourdes High School, a new MnDOT facility, a new McDonald?s, and a new four-story hotel, to name a few. Another interesting fact is the number of those permits that are for ?fit ups.? These types of permits are for construction of new offices within existing buildings that just a short while ago sat empty. And it?s not just new construction showing positive signs, but word of future projects coming to our community.

New business developments breaking ground, national chains announcing that they are coming to town, and new grocery stores all point to the fact that businesses are investing in Rochester. This is a sure sign of good things to come for our community!

The increase in commercial projects and the outlook for future projects mean one thing: jobs. Where there are jobs, there will be a need for homes.

When looking at fourth quarter 2011 versus the same period in 2010, single family permits show a 10 percent increase. While that increase does not signal a return to a completely healthy single family construction industry, it is a positive sign that things are improving.

NAHB recently released its NAHB/First American Improving Markets Index (IMI). The IMI identifies areas that have shown improvement from their lows in housing permits, employment, and house prices for six consecutive months. Rochester is on that list.

?While many of the markets? are far from fully recovered, the index points out where employment, home prices and housing production are no longer retreating?,? said NAHB Chief Economist David Crowe. ?This is a sign that a large cross section of the country is starting to turn the corner as local economic conditions stabilize.?

Why should we as a community be concerned with a healthy construction industry? Well, just as home ownership provides many benefits to individual families, it also benefits the community. According to the NAHB, whenever new homes are built, new jobs are created and a permanent source of ongoing revenue for local, state and federal government springs to life.

Just consider: Building 100 average single-family homes creates 305 jobs and generates more than $23 million in wage and business income, as well as $8.9 million in taxes and revenue for state, local and federal governments. The employment impacts are broad-based, extending far beyond the construction workers employed directly to build the homes.

Jobs are generated in the industries that manufacture and supply the many products that go into building the home. They are also created when real estate agents, lawyers and brokers provide services to home builders and home buyers. And the benefits don?t stop there.

When 100 families move into new homes, they spend $740,000 more than usual on appliances, furnishings, and property alterations, creating a further economic stimulus. In normal economic times, 17 percent of the nation?s economy relies on housing.

Rochester is a growing and vibrant community and that growth will continue into the future. I applaud the council members of the city of Rochester for creating the Permit and Development Task force, chaired by Jerry Williams. The task force worked closely with city staff and has identified areas that will help create a more efficient process, a process critical to Rochester?s future growth.

We need to be poised to enable future development and construction by having a system in place which benefits not only the builders and developers, but the community as a whole. Rochester is a wonderful community in which to live, work and play. And a Rochester with a healthy construction industry has a healthy local economy.

Now is a great time to build; I know some people who can help.

Did Leonardo da Vinci Copy His Famous 'Vitruvian Man'?

News | More Science

An Italian architectural historian thinks Giacomo Andrea de Ferrera, a Renaissance architect and da Vinci friend, drew the man-in-circle diagram first

Leonardo da Vinci's drawing of a male figure perfectly inscribed in a circle and square, known as the "Vitruvian Man," illustrates what he believed to be a divine connection between the human form and the universe. Beloved for its beauty and symbolic power, it is one of the most famous images in the world. However, new research suggests that the work, which dates to 1490, may be a copy of an earlier drawing by Leonardo's friend.

Another illustration of a divinely proportioned man?the subject is Christ-like, but the setting is strikingly similar to Leonardo's?has been discovered in a forgotten manuscript in Ferrara, Italy. Both drawings are depictions of a passage written 1,500 years earlier by Vitruvius, an ancient Roman architect, in which he describes a man's body fitting perfectly inside a circle (the divine symbol) and inside a square (the earthly symbol). It was a geometric interpretation of the ancient belief that man is a "microcosm": a miniature embodiment of the whole universe. Leonardo and other scholars revived this vainglorious notion during the Italian Renaissance.

After decades of study, Claudio Sgarbi, an Italian architectural historian who discovered the lesser known illustration of the Vitruvian man in 1986, now believes it to be the work of Giacomo Andrea de Ferrara, a Renaissance architect, expert on Vitruvius, and close friend of Leonardo's. What's more, Sgarbi believes Giacomo Andrea probably drew his Vitruvian man first, though the two men are likely to have discussed their mutual efforts. Sgarbi will lay out his arguments in a volume of academic papers to be published this winter, Smithsonian Magazine reports.

The key arguments are as follows: In Leonardo's writings, he mentions "Giacomo Andrea's Vitruvius" ? seemingly a direct reference to the illustrated Ferrara manuscript. Secondly, Leonardo had dinner with Giacomo Andrea in July 1490, the year in which both men are thought to have drawn their Vitruvian men. Experts believe Leonardo would have probed Giacomo Andrea's knowledge of Vitruvius when they met. And though both drawings interpret Vitruvius' words similarly, Leonardo's is perfectly executed, while Giacomo Andrea's is full of false starts and revisions, none of which would have been necessary if he had simply copied Leonardo's depiction, rather than the other way around. [Early Christian Lead Codices Now Called Fakes]

Other scholars find the arguments convincing.

"I find Sgarbi's argument exciting and very seductive, to say the least," said Indra McEwen, an architectural historian at Concordia University who has written extensively about the works of Vitruvius. "But [I] would opt for the view that Giacomo Andrea and Leonardo worked in tandem, rather than Leonardo basing his drawing on Andrea's."

Rather than competitors, the two Renaissance men were colleagues working together to bring a beautiful, ancient idea back to life. "Whose was the 'original' drawing is a non-question as far as I'm concerned. ?Much as it is a preoccupation of our own time, I don't think it would have been an issue in Leonardo's day," McEwen told Life's Little Mysteries.

Patrice Le Floch-Prigent, an anatomist at the University of Versailles in France who has analyzed the anatomical correctness of Leonardo's famous work, noted that, for both drawings, "the source is Vitruvius."

Clothing made with recycled coffee beans warms you up without caffeine (Yahoo! News)

Everyone's favorite bean can now keep you warm inside and out

When the?weather turns cold, it's not uncommon for folks to warm up with a nice steaming cup of coffee. But who would have thought that everyone's favorite bean could help keep you warm on the outside as well as in? Californian high-tech sports apparel company Virus apparently did, because their?Stay Warm line of cold-weather clothing is made from recycled coffee beans.

Called coffee charcoal, the fabric has incredible natural insulating properties. Virus says that their studies show that wearing this fabric next to the skin can raise surface temperatures by as much as 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Moisture wicking and quick-dry properties also go a long way towards keeping you comfortable in cold weather.

The Stay Warm line is meant to be worn as an underlayer; since the fabric isn't wind-resistant, you'll need something else on top of it to keep the cold winter wind out. The garments start at $30.50 for a pair of "performance boxers" and go up from there?? but the cost might be worth it if you can have your coffee and wear it, too!
