Google announces 'Save to Wallet' for offers and payment cards

Android Central

Google I/O has been jam packed full of new, and exciting Google software and technology. While the headline acts are no doubt the arrival of the Nexus 7 and Jelly Bean, there has been some pretty interesting stuff going on in the developer sessions. One such session, dedicated to Google Wallet, unveiled a new feature, called Save to Wallet. Initially for offers and payment cards, it is seen as the first step in opening up Google Wallet to a wider audience.

So, what's it all about. Taking offers first, the Save to Wallet API will allow consumers to save offers from a stores website, directly to their Google Wallet. Wallet will then remind you to take advantage of it before the coupon expires. The offers can then be applied in the store, either by showing the offer code in your Wallet, or by using the NFC capabilities on your smartphone. Pretty slick.

Adding the Save to Wallet button to an existing website requires little more than a piece of Javascript code. The benefits to retailers pretty much speak for themselves, but the consumer benefits are really nice too. By managing your offer coupons for you, Wallet will give you the notifications, to remind you to use them. After all, we all want to save some money, right?

The Save to Wallet API also applies to payment cards as well. It works pretty similarly to offers, and allows payment card providers the ability to provide the same button on their website, and offer a seamless way to enter your card into your Google Wallet.

Naturally, since we're dealing with potentially sensitive data here, the API isn't just opened up to anyone who wants it. It will be opened up to a limited number of users initially, in a closed beta. Anyone interested can register, but Google will only be releasing the API to approved partners. This applies to offers, as well as payment cards.

And, what about the future? As the slide here shows, Google are promising more, coming soon. It's a smart move, if they can make a go of it. Apple's Passbook is likely the beginnings of their own Wallet solution, and Windows Phone 8 has theirs on the way. Google's taking a good first step here into expanding the functionality of Wallet. What we need now, is greater adoption -- we'd like to use our phones to pay for stuff in Europe too, Google.

For your viewing convenience, we've embedded the Google Wallet session after the break.

Success in the Restaurant Industry Requires Superior ... - Retail Digital

Source: Restaurant Consultants of America

Chelsea, AL, June 26, 2012 --(PR.com)-- In a sense, the state of the restaurant industry is the same as it has always been. Change is always in the air, but the business is still serving food and catering to the American love of quality. American restaurant owners know what customers expect.

Howard Cannon, CEO of Restaurant Consultants of America spends a lot of time coaching new restaurant owners and wanna-be restaurant owners. One way he does this is through his books and frequently published articles. Having spent his entire career in the restaurant and hospitality industry, he is dedicated to helping restaurant owners achieve success. One requirement for long-term success is quality products and quality service.

Regardless of the restaurant?s menu, category, or concept, if a restaurant is competing near the top of its segment with great products and services, there is always a chance for success. Mr. Cannon says, "Customers will frequent the restaurant that delivers the best products and services at the right price in a given market area. If Bill?s restaurant is all that?s available, that?s the place where people will spend their money. If they have two or three choices, they will spend their money at the place providing the best food and service at the fairest price. The restaurant business is a fun, competitive environment?if you?re great."

The marketplace has plenty of room for new and innovative concepts as well. Our society has shown great interest in making a dining experience like a short vacation. Although the restaurant business is difficult, new people are always stepping into the industry wanting to compete. Some want to compete with the big boys, some want to compete with the mom-and-pop places, some want to compete with new concepts, and some want to compete by improving on what has always been done, but they come in busloads ready to compete. Cannon advises, "The question that you must answer for yourself is, do you have what it takes to stand out from the crowd and succeed?"

Success comes with having the necessary knowledge, a good plan, the ability to execute well, and an ample supply of money. Cannon says, "The best restaurant success strategy is to be great at what you do."

Howard Cannon is a highly-recognized restaurant expert witness, consultant, analyst, and speaker. He is the author of The Complete Idiot?s Guide to Starting a Restaurant? - found in 76 countries around the globe. A look at recent tech-industry earnings

Here is a summary of recent earnings and reports for selected technology companies and what they reveal about the state of spending and the overall economy:

April 6: Samsung Electronics Co. says it is expecting a record operating profit of $5.1 billion for the first quarter. It says the result would be a 97 percent rise from its operating profit a year earlier. Samsung estimated that its first quarter sales rose 21.6 percent from a year earlier. More details will come when Samsung releases its full quarterly results.

April 12: Google Inc. reports adjusted earnings and adjusted revenue that beat expectations. Google's revenue was helped by a 39 percent increase in "paid clicks," but the prices of its search-driven text ads continued to decline. CEO Larry Page called the first quarter "very strong," but acknowledgehd there's more work to do.

April 17: Yahoo Inc.'s first-quarter earnings show signs of modest progress under recently hired CEO Scott Thompson. Net income grew 28 percent from the same time last year and exceeded expectations. Revenue grew less than 1 percent, but represented a breakthrough because the company's revenue has been steadily falling for years.

IBM Corp. says first-quarter net income grew 7 percent, helped by strong profit margins in its services business and strong revenue growth across its software and services businesses. Revenue was flat overall because of declines in the hardware and financing segments, and revenue fell short of analysts' expectations. IBM increases its full-year guidance to at least $15 per share, above the $14.93 expected by analysts.

Intel Corp. says its net income in the first quarter fell 13 percent as spending on research and marketing rose while sales were flat.

April 18: EBay Inc. says its first-quarter net income grew 20 percent thanks to higher revenue from its PayPal business and brisk sales at its e-commerce websites. The results beat Wall Street's expectations.

Mobile phone chipmaker Qualcomm Inc. says its quarterly profit more than doubled as strong demand for smartphones boosted its sales; but it expects costs to increase as it makes more chips.

April 19: Microsoft Corp. fares better than analysts anticipated in its latest quarter, boosted by a surprising rise in sales of its Windows operating system for personal computers

Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. reports adjusted earnings and revenue that beat Wall Street's expectations. AMD's revenue forecast for the current quarter was at $1.59 billion to $1.68 billion, while analysts surveyed by FactSet were expecting $1.59 billion.

Nokia Corp. reports a huge net loss, one of the company's worst ever quarters, and blames tougher-than-expected competition. It has faced stiff competition from the likes of Apple Inc.'s iPhone and handset makers using Google Inc.'s popular Android software.

April 23: Netflix Inc. says it suffered its first quarterly loss in seven years, but the setback was far smaller than analysts expected. Netflix had rising licensing fees and a bill for an international expansion. Netflix predicted that it would make money during the current quarter. Still, Wall Street was worried about tougher competition. Skittish investors keyed on a second-quarter forecast that calls for a slowdown in subscriber growth during the spring and early summer.

Chipmaker Texas Instruments Inc. says first-quarter net income fell 60 percent from a year ago as revenue shrank. But the results still beat analysts' expectations.

Xerox Corp. says first-quarter net income fell 4 percent as the company spent more on building its services business, which now makes up more than half the company's revenue. The company says it's investing in new offerings and long-term contracts in order to increase growth. In the short term, that has hurt profitability.

April 24: Apple Inc. reported blowout iPhone sales ? 35 million in the latest quarter, almost twice as many as it sold a year ago and above analyst expectations. Net income nearly doubled to $11.6 billion, and revenue was up 59 percent at $39.2 billion. IPad sales came in below analyst expectations, at 11.8 million units. But that was still two and a half times as many as it sold in the same quarter a year ago.

April 25: Motorola Solutions Inc., which sells communications equipment to government and corporate customers, says first-quarter net income declined from a year ago, when the company recorded a large tax-related gain. Revenue grew thanks to strong demand from the company's government customers.

April 26: Amazon.com Inc. reports strong quarterly earnings and says its Kindle Fire tablet computer remains its best-selling item. However, its outlook for revenue growth was slower than expected.

Online games company Zynga Inc. reports adjusted earnings of 6 cents a share, a penny better than what Wall Street expected. Revenue grew 32 percent.

April 27: A surge in Galaxy smartphone sales fueled earnings at Samsung Electronics to a record high in the first quarter, usually a tough season for the global consumer-electronics industry. The South Korean company outshined handset rivals such as Nokia Corp. Strong demand for high-end smartphones, such as the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy S2 introduced last year, helped mask lower profit from memory chips, another Samsung flagship business.

May 1: Mobile phone maker Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. reports a slightly larger net loss in the first quarter as expenses grew more than revenue. Motorola says it still expects its acquisition by Google to close by the end of June. The deal still needs to be approved by authorities in China.

May 3: LinkedIn Corp. says its first-quarter net income more than doubled, and its revenue doubled from a year ago. Adjusted profit and revenue beat expectations. During the quarter, revenue grew across the company's divisions. The business-networking company also announces plans to buy presentation-sharing website SlideShare for $118.8 million.

May 9: Cisco Systems Inc. says its quarterly earnings surged 20 percent in the latest sign that a recently completed overhaul is paying off for the world's largest maker of computer-networking equipment. However, Cisco raised the specter of a sharp slowdown in technology spending, rattling investors already fretting about the economy's fragile condition. Cisco made a sobering forecast for the current quarter and traced it to skittish customers who are waiting longer to close deals and spending less money because of growing uncertainty about the economy, particularly in Europe and India.

May 14: Online deals company Groupon Inc. says it had a smaller net loss and sharply higher revenue in the first quarter, helped by increased demand from a growing customer base.

May 17: Salesforce.com Inc., which makes Web-based business software, says it had a net loss in the first quarter, but adjusted profit and revenue beat expectations. It raises its forecast for full-year results.

May 22: Dell Inc. reports disappointing first-quarter results and forecasts weak sales in the current quarter. The computer maker says sales to big businesses, consumers and the public sector decreased.

May 23: Hewlett-Packard Co. says it will cut 27,000 workers, or 8 percent of its work force, by October 2014. News of the cutbacks overshadowed the release of HP's latest quarterly results. The company's earnings and revenue were both better than analysts projected.

June 18: Oracle Corp says net income increased 8 percent and topped analysts' predictions. Oracle also posted a 7 percent gain in its sales of new software licenses, indicating there is still strong demand for technology that helps businesses automate their administrative tasks.

June 19: Software company Adobe Systems Inc. says net income in the latest quarter fell 2 percent, amid higher expenses. Revenue grew with strong sales of its Creative Suite product.

Lonesome George Dies; Galapagos Giant Tortoise Was Over 100

Lonesome George, the last surviving giant tortoise of Pinta Island in the Galapagos Islands, has died. Scientists say he was more than 100 years old.

Staff at the Galapagos National Park in Ecuador say George, the only remaining member of his subspecies, was found dead by his long-term keeper.

The park said it was "unhappily surprised" to discover his charge "stretched out in the direction of his watering hole with no signs of life," on Sunday.

L. George

A post-mortem examination will ascertain the cause of death; as old as he was by human standards, Lonesome George was not old for a giant tortoise.

The animals can live to around 200 years of age or even longer.

Lonesome George became a symbol of the Galapagos Islands and evolution in general after he was found on Pinta Island by Joseph Vagvolgyi in 1971.

George's plight as the only known member of his subspecies (hence his nickname) led to a series of ill-fated attempts to provide him with a mate.

But despite the efforts of conservationists - and two female tortoises from a close subspecies at the Charles Darwin Research Station - it wasn't to be.

George remained a solitary creature until his death yesterday.

His death marks the end of the purebred Pinta Island tortoise, but there is hope that they will survive in some form: at least one first-generation descendant of the subspecies has been found at the Wolf volcano on neighboring Isabela Island.

Genetic testing has been carried out to try to find further hybrids residing among the population there, according to reports.

The giant tortoises of the Galapagos played a key role in helping Charles Darwin formulate his theory of evolution after he visited the islands in the 1830s.

At the time, the super-sized reptiles were common, but the introduction of wild goats, which ate the vegetation that formed their diet, and the hunting habits of passing sailors left them on the brink of extinction.

Discovery of material with amazing properties

ScienceDaily (June 24, 2012) ? Normally a material can be either magnetically or electrically polarized, but not both. Now researchers at the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen have studied a material that is simultaneously magnetically and electrically polarizable. This opens up new possibilities, for example, for sensors in technology of the future. The results have been published in the scientific journal, Nature Materials.

Materials that can be both magnetically and electrically polarized and also have additional properties are called multiferroics and were previously discovered by Russian researchers in the 1960s. But the technology to examine the materials did not exist at that time. It is only now, in recent years, that researchers have once again focused on analyzing the properties of such materials. Now you have research facilities that can analyze the materials down to the atomic level.

Surprising test results

"We have studied the rare, naturally occurring iron compound, TbFeO3, using powerful neutron radiation in a magnetic field. The temperature was cooled down to near absolute zero, minus 271 C. We were able to identify that the atoms in the material are arranged in a congruent lattice structure consisting of rows of the heavy metal terbium separated by iron and oxygen atoms. Such lattices are well known, but their magnetic domains are new. Normally, the magnetic domains lie a bit helter-skelter, but here we observed that they lay straight as an arrow with the same distance between them. We were completely stunned when we saw it," explains Kim Lefmann, Associate Professor at the Nano-Science Center, University of Copenhagen.

They were very strange and very beautiful measurements and it is just such a discovery that can awaken the researchers' intense interest. Why does it look like this?

Explaining physics

The experiments were conducted at the neutron research facility Helmholtz-Zentrum in Berlin in collaboration with researchers in Holland, Germany, at ESS in Lund and at Ris?/DTU. They would like to get a general understanding of the material and with the help of calculations; and have now arrived at a more precise image of the relationship between the structure of the material and its physical properties.

"What the models are describing is that the terbium walls interact by exchanging waves of spin (magnetism), which is transferred through the magnetic iron lattice. The result is a Yukawa-like force, which is known from nuclear and particle physics. The material exhibits in a sense the same interacting forces that hold the particles together in atomic nuclei," explains Heloisa Bordallo, Associate Professor at the Niels Bohr Institute.

It is precisely this interaction between the transition metal, iron, and the rare element, terbium, that plays an important role in this magneto-electrical material. The terbium's waves of spin cause a significant increase in the electric polarization and the interaction between the ions of the elements creates one of the strongest magneto-electrical effects observed in materials.

"Through these results we found a new pathway to discover and develop new multiferroics," emphasize the researchers in the group. Now it is up to further research to determine whether this new effect could lead to new applications of these materials with the amazing physical properties.

Islamist Morsi named Egypt's president

CAIRO (AP) ? Islamist Mohammed Morsi was declared the winner Sunday in Egypt's first free presidential election in history, closing the tumultuous first phase of a democratic transition and opening a new struggle with the still-dominant military rulers who recently stripped the presidency of most of its powers.

In Tahrir Square, the birthplace of the uprising that ousted autocratic President Hosni Mubarak, joyous Morsi supporters wept and kneeled on the ground in prayer as soon as they heard the outcome announced live television. They danced, set off fireworks and released doves in the air with Morsi's picture attached in celebrations not seen in the square since Mubarak was forced out on Feb. 11, 2011.

Many are looking now to see whether Morsi will try to take on the military and wrestle back the powers they took from his office just one week ago. Thousands vowed to remain in Tahrir to demand that the ruling generals reverse their decision.

"I pledge to be a president who serves his people and works for them," Morsi said on his official web page. "I will not betray God in defending your rights and the rights of this nation." He was scheduled to address the nation Sunday night in his first speech after being declared president.

The White House congratulated Morsi and urged him to advance national unity as he forms a new government. White House press secretary Jay Carney said Morsi's victory is a milestone in Egypt's transition to democracy after decades of authoritarian rule under Mubarak. The Obama administration had expressed no public preference in the presidential race.

Left on the sidelines of the political drama are the liberal and secular youth groups that drove the uprising against Mubarak, left to wonder whether Egypt has taken a step towards becoming an Islamist state. Some grudgingly supported Morsi in the face of Ahmed Shafiq, who was Mubarak's last prime minister, while others boycotted the vote.

Morsi will now have to reassure them that he represents the whole country, not just Islamists, and will face enormous challenges after security and the economy badly deteriorated in the transition period.

Pro-democracy leader Mohammed ElBaradei urged unity after the results were announced.

"It is time we work all as Egyptians as part of a national consensus to build Egypt that is based on freedom and social justice," he wrote on his Twitter account.

The elections left the nation deeply polarized with one side backing Shafiq, who promised to provide stability and prevent Egypt from becoming a theocracy. Because of his military career, many saw him as the military's preferred candidate.

In the other camp are those eager for democratic change and backers of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood who were persecuted, jailed and banned under Mubarak but now find themselves one of the two most powerful groups in Egypt.

The other power center is the ruling military council that took power after the uprising and is headed by Mubarak's defense minister of 20 years.

Just one week ago, at the moment polls were closing in the presidential runoff, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) issued constitutional amendments that stripped the president's office of most of its major powers. The ruling generals made themselves the final arbiters over the most pressing issues still complicating the transition? such as writing the constitution, legislating, passing the state budget? and granted military police broad powers to detain civilians.

"I am happy the Brotherhood won because now the revolution will continue on the street against both of them, the Brotherhood and the SCAF," said Lobna Darwish, an activist who has boycotted the elections.

Also, a few days before that constitutional declaration, a court dissolved the freely elected parliament, which is dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood, leaving the military now in charge of legislating.

Brotherhood members and experts said the results were used a bargaining chip between the generals and the Brotherhood over the parameters of what appears to be a new power-sharing agreement. The country's new constitution is not written and the authorities of the president are not clear.

This is the first time modern Egypt will be headed by an Islamist and by a freely elected civilian. The country's last four presidents over the past six decades have all came from the ranks of the military.

"Congratulations because this means the end of the Mubarak state," said Shady el-Ghazali Harb, a prominent activist who was among the leaders of the protests in January and February last year.

The results of the elections were delayed for four days amid accusations of manipulation and foul play by both sides, raising political tensions in Egypt to a fever pitch.

The delay plunged the country into nerve-wrecking anticipation and pushed tensions to a fever pitch. Parallel mass rallies by Shafiq and Morsi supporters were held in different parts of Cairo and cut-throat media attacks by supporters of both swarmed TV shows. In the hours before the announcement of the winner, the fear of new violence was palpable.

Heavy security was deployed around the country, especially outside state institutions, in anticipation of possible violence. Workers were sent home early from jobs, jewelry stores closed for fear of looting and many were stocking up on food and forming long lines at cash machines in case new troubles began.

Morsi, the 60-year old U.S.-trained engineer, narrowly defeated Shafiq with 51.7 percent of the vote versus 48.3, by a margin of only 800,000 votes, the election commission said. Turnout was 51 percent.

Farouk Sultan, the head of the commission, described the elections as "an important phase in the end of building our nascent democratic experience."

Sultan went to pains to explain the more than 400 complaints presented by the two candidates challenging counting procedures and alleging attempts of rigging. It appeared to be an attempt to discredit claims that the election commission was biased in favor of Shafiq, the candidate perceived as backed by the military rulers.

The country is deeply divided between supporters of the Brotherhood, liberals and leftists who also decided to back them as a way to stand up to the military, and other secular forces that fear the domination of the Brotherhood, and grew critical of it in the past year. The small margin of victory for Morsi also sets him for a strong opposition from supporters of Shafiq, viewed as a representative of the old regime.

Naguib Sawiris, a Coptic Christian business tycoon who joined a liberal bloc in voicing opposition to the Muslim Brotherhood a day before the results were announced, said he expects the new president to send a reassuring message to Egypt's Christian minority who represent around 10 percent of the population of 85 million.

"There are fears of imposing an Islamic state ... where Christians don't have same rights," Sawiris told the private TV station CBC. Morsi "is required to prove the opposite. ... We don't want speeches or promises but in the coming period, it is about taking action. ... He was not our choice but we are accepting it is a democratic choice."

Hamdeen Sabahi, a leftist presidential candidate who came in a surprising third place in the first round of elections, asked Morsi to live up to his pledges to form a national coalition government and appoint presidential aides from different groups "that express the largest national consensus."

Khaled Abdel-Hamid, a leading leftist politician, said Morsi must fight to get his powers back or he will lose any popular support he may have garnered.

"If he fights to get his power back, we will support him. But if he doesn't fight back, then he is settling for siding with the military," he said.

Denver Mayor Hancock faces questions about aide he fired

An investigation into alleged sexual harassment that led to the firing of an aide to Denver Mayor Michael Hancock included an audio recording that city officials have refused to release.

The city's decision to withhold the recording came in response to a Denver Post records request.

Wayne McDonald, a longtime friend of Hancock's, was fired last month from his $85,000-a-year job as an appointee after allegations of "serious misconduct" were lodged against him.

Hancock is not on the recording, said Amber Miller, Hancock's press secretary. The administration would not say who is on the recording.

Miller said the "recordings are among the rec-ords that were withheld by the city due to laws that prohibit their release."

The city's attorneys, in denying The Post's request for the recordings, cited a section of state law that prohibits disclosure of "any records of sexual harassment complaints and investigations."

Hancock on Friday morning faced the news media a day after news broke that he had fired McDonald. He said it was tough to do but that the action was in "the best interest of the city."

During his presentation of a proposed tax measure for November's ballot, Hancock faced multiple questions about McDonald.

"I've managed people, and I have never been in a place and space where it is OK to talk publicly about personnel matters," Hancock said. "We had received an accusation, which we looked into immediately, and we acted. I think everything that needed to be said has been said publicly. There really isn't anything more."

The mayor's office on Thursday, responding to an open-records request from The Post, said serious allegations of misconduct were made about McDonald on May 16. The next day, an internal review was conducted, and McDonald was fired May 21.

A female police officer at the center of the investigation was transferred to a new assignment after the allegations surfaced.

Hancock said his administration will be "diligent in protecting the privacy right of Wayne McDonald, as well as the other employee."

McDonald's attorney, Anne Sulton, said in a statement that she hopes journalists continue to search for the truth.

"Mr. McDonald denies being involved in any misconduct," she said. "He is weighing his options as we move forward to clear his name."

Sulton said she will ask the city attorney to "place a litigation hold on all documents, e-mails, tapes, calendars and other materials related to this case." She said she will ask the court next week for an order preserving those materials.

"The public has a right to know what happened, and my client has a right to take actions that will clear his name," she said.

Richard Allen Schoenfeld, Infamous California Bus Kidnapper, Living In Mountain View

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. ? One of three men who kidnapped a busload of California school children in 1976 is now living with his mother in a San Francisco suburb after being released from prison.

Richard Allen Schoenfeld was taken to Mountain View on Wednesday following his release after more than 35 years, police spokesman Liz Wylie said.

Schoenfeld's mother, Merry, confirmed to The Associated Press that he was staying with her, but had no further comment.

His older brother, John Schoenfeld, spoke to San Francisco television station CBS5, shortly after his brother was released.

"My mother, and the whole family . would like to say we're sorry to the victims," John Schoenfeld told the station.

"Unfortunately, my brothers didn't understand. It wasn't only the kids, they thought the kids were going to be home in a couple of days, but it was a kid, it was a family, it was a whole community they affected."

The 57-year-old Schoenfeld will be required to wear a GPS monitoring device 24 hours a day, and will be monitored by police, authorities said.

Mountain View police were in communication with parole agents for the past week in preparation for Schoenfeld's release, acting Police Chief Mike Hamlin said in a statement.

"The MVPD will continue to work closely with parole in monitoring Schoenfeld to ensure the safety of our community members," Hamlin said.

Schoenfeld, his brother, James, and a friend, Fred Woods, were convicted of kidnapping 26 school students and their bus driver and burying them alive in a van inside a Livermore rock quarry in the hopes of collecting a $5 million ransom.

Their plot unraveled when they took a nap, and students and bus driver were able to escape unhurt.

All three men received life sentences after pleaded guilty to kidnapping charges.

An appeals court in February ordered Richard Schoenfeld be released from prison, ruling that the Board of Parole Hearings had unfairly set his parole date for 2021 even though it concluded he wasn't a threat to society.

But Schoenfeld had remained locked up while the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation appealed to the California Supreme Court.

When the high court notified CDCR earlier this month that it was refusing to take the case, prison officials had no choice but to release Schoenfeld.

"As such, CDCR does not have any legal option other than to release inmate Schoenfeld and will do so," CDCR spokesman Luis Patino said after the decision.

James Schoenfeld and Woods have parole hearings later this year.

Make Facebook Photos Private

Now you can fine tune the settings for each album. You can adjust them so that they are visible to everyone, friends of friends, or just friends. You can also make a custom setting that allows you to block specific people from viewing your photos.

Here are some suggestions for determining who should be able to see your photos:

  • If you're afraid of pictures being stolen, set privacy to only friends and use a digital watermark.
  • For pictures of nature, buildings and other generic images, consider sharing with everyone unless you're concerned about your copyright.
  • For pictures of friends, especially those in public situations, share with friends or friends of friends.
  • When posting pictures of children, especially if they aren't your own (please ask permission before posting!), share with just friends.

Barely South Review ? Speaking Our Truth

Old Dominion University M.F.A. Creative Writing Program student Wendi White attended the 2012 Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP) national conference in March. She queried a diverse group of women writers on how they have navigated the rocky waters of composing a writer?s life. She spoke with women authors of varying genres and ages about the empowerment strategies they have used to break through the barriers that women writers still experience. These conversations also explored what is needed for women to make continued progress in the profession.

For writers there are three roads that wind toward truth: reportage, lyric imagery, and narrative. While all these roads traverse different landscapes, at their best, compassion for our shared humanity is the destination of each. So though there is great variation between nonfiction, poetry and fiction?s relationship to ?facts?, in the end they are all ways to push the pen beneath the surface of experience and ask, ?What does this mean?? Pablo Picasso put it this way, ?Art is the lie that tells the truth.?

This past March, I had the honor of discussing how writers come to speak their truth with three very accomplished women authors: the nationally acclaimed poet, Dorianne Laux, award winning novelist and short story writer, Bonnie Jo Campbell, and journalist and author of a bestselling memoir, Janine Latus. Though they each write in a different genre, there were striking commonalities across the three conversations; an indispensable teacher, a pivotal text or artist, and an experience that emboldened them to say what they had to say.

In my conversation with Dorianne Laux, a poet whose pitch perfect voice and deep reserve of empathy caused Philip Levine to compare her to Walt Whitman, I asked her what sparked the writing fire in her soul. Without missing a beat, she revealed that Bertol Brecht held that place of honor. She fell in love with drama in high school, studied it in college, but eventually became disillusioned with how actors were always, well, acting. Then she read and saw Brecht?s work, recognizing that he was doing something very different. ?I admired how Brecht was speaking his personal truth.? To this day, the power of such truth telling informs her writing.

But being inspired by Brecht was not enough to launch her poet?s journey. At this point, Laux was only writing poems in private.? It took that alchemy of necessity and good fortune for her to publically proclaim herself a poet.? As a single mother, Laux was waiting tables and felt she needed to return to school to be a good role model and provider for her daughter.? She recounts how she chose her academic field: ?I am naturally lazy, so I knew I had to pursue something I love. I decided to take English classes because I enjoyed writing and thought maybe I could be an editor or a journalist . . . do something practical with my life and get job writing.?

It was in her first composition class that Laux met the poet and teacher, Patricia Traxler. After being assigned poems to compose, Laux?s professor responded by saying ?You know you really excel at the poem, you should write poems.? So Laux recalls,

?I took poetry classes and eventually studied with Steve Kowit, a wonderful poet. He introduced me to all the women poets, and world poets. I didn?t know there were women my age that had children and were writing poetry . . . After I found out about the whole thing . . . the readings in the bookstores, got my first poems published in local magazines, then I realized I wanted to be a poet. ?

And though recognition of her talent and knowing that other women in similar circumstances were undertaking a poet?s life helped Laux imagine a life of verse, it was the political courage that poets like Carolynn Forche and Sharon Olds displayed in addressing state violence, racism and family violence, that convinced her of a writing life?s worth.

?I was a single-mother. I was a waitress living in a border town who had seen a lot of domestic cruelty, and who had seen a lot of political cruelty. Forche had the courage to go down to Central America and Olds was so outrageously honest even though she grew up with so many family secrets. (After reading their poems, I understood) people can tell the truth . . . Quietly, in a darkened room with one light on a person, just saying what they have to say.?

Bonnie Jo Campbell, a writer of stories of people and places at the margins of society, took a similarly roundabout route to being a writer, although she confessed,

?All my life I wanted to write but I never let myself. I didn?t want to be involved in something I saw as cruel and competitive because I thought I didn?t have a chance. What does a little farm kid from Michigan have to say? I am pretty tough, but writing makes you very vulnerable with all you have written out there in the world.?

Like Laux?s flirtations with editing and journalism, Campbell could not imagine herself as a novelist, and so she got two undergraduate degrees in other fields: one in philosophy and one in mathematics. She was on her way to a Ph.D. when a math adviser, who knew she still wanted to write, suggested she take a class with author Jaimy Gordon.? Like Campbell, Gordon outlines the human condition through the narratives of people and places that have fallen on hard times. After reading Campbell?s work, Gordon told her, ?You have what it takes,? and having someone that Campbell so admired value her as a writer, provided the final push she needed to call herself an author.

It also gave Campbell permission to tell the stories of outsider women: circus performers and the struggling inhabitants of Campbell?s native Kalamazoo for example. In our conversation, I asked why so many of the characters in the her short story collection, Women and Other Animals, are souls just eking out an existence or living on the edge and Campbell responded:

?I want to take the reader to the dark side to show what true resiliency looks like. My women are not victims. They are facing dire and desperate circumstances, but they are survivors. Interesting stories are not about victims but survivors.?

That there is something inside of us that can rise up whole after shattering abuse, that after betrayal and loss, our capacity to love and speak that love can redeem us, certainly makes survivors worthy protagonists. This a literary truth mirrored in the non-fiction work of writers like Janine Latus.

In her New York Times Bestselling memoir, If I Am found Dead or Missing, Latus shares the story of her sister?s murder and her own experience of sexual and relationship abuse. When I queried her about her motivation to reveal such difficult personal stories, she replied:

?I wanted to write a book as important as Are you There God? It?s me Margaret?, by Judy Bloom. It exposed something nobody was talking about. It was so revolutionary then.? If you can write, you can make people consider things they would never have thought of before.

I couldn?t save my sister Amy, so I wrote my book to save the other Amys out there. I wrote it because as Harriet Tubman said, ?I saved a thousand slaves. I would have saved a thousand more if they knew that they were slaves.? I did it to create a wedge so dangerous behavior in the beginning of relationships would be recognized.?

And speaking these truths about her sister, herself, and her family?s history took immense courage, but Latus knew she had to tell these stories because they epitomized the dynamic of abuse she wanted to expose:

?I wrote (about what happened to me)so people would recognize ?the abuse in their own lives and turn to each other and say ,we need to talk.?

And it is one thing to tell your own secrets but quite another to tell the stories of your family.? Latus called negotiating these waters the one of the most difficult parts of her project:

?Everyone but my father read my book before it was published and almost all of them supported me because they are so incredibly brave. It was also helpful that a magazine article I wrote for Oprah, ?All the Wrong Men,? had recently come out and my family members were told by their colleagues that our story was their story too. My family understood the impact the book could have because of the way people responded to that article.?

So with Latus, as with Laux and Campbell, it was clear that chance to make a positive difference made telling a personal truth worth the risk. The act of writing is important, but it is the reader who ultimately concerned the women I interviewed. They write to touch another person?s life through literary truth telling, and if their words are ?the best words, in the best order,? these women believe that the world might be better off for their breaking the silence and lifting their pens.

Hidden- Song Fic for "Blinding"

Hidden

A smile danced across the girl's lips as she soared towards the sky. She dared to release her grip on the chain in her right hand and reach for the endless sea of blue above her, above everything she'd ever known.

Her father continued to push his daughter forward on the swing. It wasn't quite monotonous, but the action and joy of his daughter could not keep his thoughts at bay. Weeks ago, the family's elder daughter had run off in some sort of bid for fame, adventure, and most of all, romance.

Anything could happen out there in such a dangerous and insecure world. Both parents had become consumed by the what ifs their precious daughter might face. It caused an ever downward spiral of worries.

The little girl was suddenly crying, breaking the father away from his thoughts. He rushed over to where the girl sat on the ground, tears falling down her round cheeks. He knew that she had let go and attempted to jump from the swing.

The little girl looked up at her father with a quivering lip and innocent hazel eyes. "I was trying to fly like all of the birds in the sky," she replied. The girl had always wanted to be a bird, or an angel. She decided then that was what she would be later in life, an angel that would help others in desperate need of assistance.

"Let's go get cleaned up for dinner," her father said, sighing. He offered out his hand, which she took. Her small hand was enclosed in his as they walked to the small house at the top of the hill.

***

Closed. Why was the door always closed at night? What was there to keep out if the little girl was to be in bed, sleeping and dreaming of love, luck, and lollipops?

The pads of the girl's finger tips reached for the doorknob, settling on the cool, shiny metal that was taller than her. She found herself preparing to open the door, her brain, muscles and nerves processing the action.

Yet something was holding her back, like a spell had been cast on her by a wandering fairy. The little girl paused, and realized that she hadn't entered because there were voices. They were hushed and quick, but easily recognizable to her.

"Just a bit longer..." her mother pleaded.

"She's dead!" The father's sudden and violent shout startled the mother and young girl.

After the initial shock, all three found their ears ringing. The haunting words repeated themselves in the heads of the family, until a fraction of their meaning could be captured. Despite knowing this, the parents still trembled at the simple words.

A daughter, a sister, a friend, was dead. The word gave a numbing sense by itself, but also inspired something more.

"We can't tell her!" A flood of anger enveloped the mother as she began screaming words the child hadn't known existed.

Four letter words that others were not suppose to say came spewing out, but the child could have never known that. She hadn't been told that there were bad words and bad people out there. She had grown up, an innocent flower sheltered from the cruel reality of the crimes humanity committed every day, hour, and minute.

The small girl recoiled as if the door knob had burned her. Warm tears were forming in her eyes as she rushed blindly up the steps towards her room.

She ran with her head down, her long strawberry blonde hair in her face. She found herself racing an invisible foe to her room at the end of the hall. Somehow though, she knew that she wouldn't win. Without the positive attitude others depended on, she dropped onto the wooden floor.

Moments later, a grieving mother and father came to her aid. Both were on their knees, looking down at the precious girl who they were trying to desperately to protect. But how can one protect another when their own fears have been realized and published like a reality show in real time?

"Honey," her mother began in a shaky and fragile voice. Her face was pale and it looked as though she might atop breathing at any moment.

"Sh-she's dead. I heard him say it!" The girl's words came out in sputters and gasps as she tried to keep herself in check.

The two adults looked at each other, their faces draining of what little color was left. It did not occur to them that she would be up at this hour, let alone eavesdropping by their door. She was always the responsible one of the sisters, the one who washed her hands before dinner and helped clean around the house. This little girl was the one who had assured them that their daughter- her sister, would be ok. Yet here she was, on the floor in tears.

The father opened his mouth to say something, anything really, but found that his words were whisked away without warning. Lying was out of the question now.

"Just go back to sleep dear. We can discuss this in the morning."

But their little girl remained where she was, shaking in her oversized shirt and old sweatpants. This could not wait until the morning.

"You said it yourself that she's dead. How am I supposed to go on knowing that my sister is dead, knowing that I was lied to!" The girl exploded with anger and bitter hatred for what her parents had done. They'd betrayed her, left her in the dust. "What else aren't you telling me?"

The mother looked helplessly as her little girl transformed into what she truly was- a young teenager. She was not the six year old girl they had been holding onto for the past few years. She was growing, learning, and adapting to these new challenges. Whether that was beneficial or not could be discussed later.

"She's dead," the teenager's mother said without much emotion.

Looking worn out and years older, she pleaded with her daughter to forgive them. It was for her sake and protection they had kept the death a secret. Stress was high enough with school work and the constant longing she knew her daughter felt for a relationship.

"Those aren't excuses. You give me crap about lying or forgetting to turn off a light, but here we are and you didn't even tell me that my own sister is dead!" Her voice was rising, anger overcoming sorrow. A roll of thunder could be heard outside, indicating a storm. But the true terror was here and now, in a suburban home with only three members now.

"Maybe she ran off because she knew something that I still don't." The daughter instantly regretted her words, bringing even more internal turmoil. But she couldn't stop now, she couldn't hide her truths any longer.

"I don't blame her either. You've treated me like I'm some glass vase but I'm not. I want to have just one day where I'm not five years old in your heads. I hate having you tell me what to do to make you happy, but then you aren't happy enough. I guess I'm just a complication in your perfect little fairy tale.

"I am not Emmeline! I am me and I am not your key to happiness. I'm not a story you can use to avoid the real world and all the perverts in it. I can't bring my sister back to life as much as I want to."

The girl turned and walked to her door, tears streaming down her face. She opened it, then stepped inside before turning to her parents for one last hurrah.

"No more dreaming. It's time to wake up and face the real world."
