Apple?s iPad Sales SOARING

Sales of the iPad were the saving grace for Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) in the company?s third-quarter earnings report announced last week, and the tablet looks set to drive profits for it for a long time to come. The iPad accounted for 68 percent of all tablet shipments in the world in the last quarter, according to a new research report, taking Apple?s share of the market to its highest level in almost two years.

Don?t Miss: Does Apple Have Damning Evidence Against Samsung?

According to the?research from Strategy Analytics, global tablet shipments grew 67 percent year-over-year in the second calendar quarter to total 25 million, and were largely driven by the iPad.

Apple announced?on Tuesday that it had sold 17 million iPads in the June-ending quarter, representing an 84 percent increase from the same period a year before. According to Strategy Analytics, a total of 7.3 million Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android-powered tablets were sold in the same period. That divides the total market into 68.3 percent for Apple, 29.3 percent for Android, and 1.2 percent for Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), which is banking on the launch of Windows 8 later this year as well as its own Surface to make a move in the space.

?Despite high expectations for companies like Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), Samsung, Acer, and Asus, the Android community has yet to make a serious dent in Apple?s dominance of the tablet market,? Strategy Analytics? Neil Mawston said.

The report blamed less than spectacular designs and a ?modest number of tablet-optimized services? for Android?s performance thus far, though the launch of the Google Nexus 7 is expected to make an extra push in the second half of the year. The new tablet is already doing fairly well, with its 16GB model already sold out.

Shares of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) finished the week at $585.16 per share Friday.

Spain angers feminists with plan to tighten abortion law

Spain's conservative government has provoked a storm among women's groups with plans to tighten abortion laws to make the procedure illegal in cases where the foetus is deformed.

About 100 people took part in a rally in Madrid's central Tirso de Molina square on Sunday to protest against the proposed reform which they argue will take Spain back to the era of the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco.

The crowd, mostly women, chanted "We give birth, we decide" and "Not one step backwards".

"It seems to us to be a throwback to the Franco dictatorship and we are not willing to accept under any circumstances measures that will take away our rights," said Justa Montero, member of the Feminist Assembly, one of the women's groups that organised the protest.

The government announced Friday it would alter an abortion law introduced by its Socialist predecessors in 2010 which gave women the legal right to abortion on demand for up to 14 weeks of pregnancy.

The 2010 law also allowed women the legal right to abort up to the 22nd week of pregnancy in cases where the mother's health is at risk or the foetus shows serious deformities.

In cases of extreme malformation of a foetus, an abortion could be carried out at any time if approved by an ethics committee.

But Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon said the law should be changed to ban abortion in cases of a deformed foetus.

"I don't understand why we should deprive a foetus of life by allowing abortion for the simple reason that it suffers a handicap or a deformity," he said in an interview published in conservative daily La Razon on July 22.

The vast majority of Spaniards, 81 percent, are against banning abortion in cases where a foetus is malformed, according to a poll published Sunday in left-wing newspaper El Pais.

The reform was rejected by 65 percent of those who said they voted for the Popular Party in a general election last year as well as by 64 percent of those who define themselves as practicing Catholics.

"The minister's proposal is totally cynical," said Montero as protesters around her chanted pro-choice slogans.

"He demonstrates a concern that then is not followed up with other measures. He makes this statement at the same time as the government is cutting funding to services for handicapped people and children with deformities."

Santiago Barambio, the head of the Spanish association of abortion clinics, Acai, and one of the authors of the 2010 abortion law, said the justice minister was appealing to his party's right wing with the proposal.

"The minister represents the extreme right and the ultra-Catholics, which are perhaps a minority but are very powerful economically, such as Opus Dei for example," he said in a reference to the conservative Roman Catholic organisation whose name in Latin means "Work of God".

Anti-abortion groups welcomed the planned abortion law reform.

Gador Joya, the spokesman for the "Right to Life" collective, said banning abortion in cases of a malformed foetus "is a step forward for the protection of the right to life."

"But it is not enough because we believe that 97 percent of the abortions carried out for other reasons are carried out under false pretences," he added.

Before the 2010 abortion reform, women could have an abortion only in cases of rape, serious deformity or when the mother's mental or physical health was threatened.

The vast majority of the 115,000 abortions carried out in 2009, the year before the reform, were performed at private clinics and were justified on the grounds that the pregnancy posed a "psychological risk" to the woman.

Debt crisis: live

15.18 Spain has not, and will not, ask the EU to buy Spanish government debt to ease its borrowing costs, the head of the Spanish Treasury has insisted. Inigo Fernandez de Mesa told Spanish daily Expansion:

It is not on Spain's agenda to ask for help from the fund and to ask that it buy debt. Far from it [...] This has not happened and I can assure you that it is not going to.

14.49 The ECB did not buy any bonds on the secondary market last week, data from the central bank show. We hope to get more clarity on whether the ECB plans to buy any debt and when at Mario Draghi's interest rate press conference on Thursday.

...or not. Here's how "clear" former ECB president Jean-Claude Trichet was when the central bank started buying peripheral debt last year:

Quote [On] the SMP: don?t expect me to say anything more than what I have said before. Since the very beginning of the SMP, I have never said anything, except that, if we intervene, we intervene. You will see what we will have done, and we will publish this information. I will not say any more on that [...]everything is driven by the consideration of the fact that we are the central bank for 17 countries and that we have to observe monetary policy transmission in this very vast area, which is the size of the United States of America. All we are doing in this domain is helping to restore better monetary policy transmission, obviously in exceptionally difficult circumstances.

14.16 US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has arrived in Germany for "informal talks" with Wolfgang Schaeuble, Germany's finance minister. The pair were due to hold a press briefing after their meeting, but due to time constraints, will issue a statement instead:

Wolfgang Schaeuble (left) and Timothy Geithner meet for talks in Westerland on the German island of Sylt on Monday (Photo: Reuters).

14.01 The EU must press ahead with proposals to issue joint debt "one way or another," according to the EU's commissioner for social affairs.

L?szl? Andor told German newswire DPA:

Quote The EU member states try to muddle through by various solutions. The European Central Bank - I think luckily - has been very innovative. Some of its measures gave us some extra time to think about proper sustainable solutions [...] But what I have always said: Either this crisis - or the next - will bring about the eurobonds as they are mostly called [...] The point is the mutualisation of the public debt, one way or another.

13.43 Meanwhile, European debt inspectors continue to scrutinise the country's finances under the watchful eye of Greek police...

European Commission director Matthias Morse, flanked by Greek police, leaves the country's finance ministry in Athens (Photo: Reuters).

13.31 The coalition government in Greece will meet this evening to try to agree on an ?11.5bn package of cuts that will unlock the next tranche of its EU/IMF bail-out.

Junior coalition partners have so far refused to sign off on the new proposals, and a government spokesman refused to rule out new pension and salary cuts. The meeting will begin at around 4pm UK time.

The uncertainty in Greece comes amid rolling strikes by ATEBank employees, who were protesting the state-run bank's takeover by Piraeus Bank.

Separately, members of Greek bank union OTOE are also on strike today over austerity cuts.

A woman leaves a branch of the National Bank of Greece during a 24-hour strike by bank employees in Athens. The sign reads: "24-hour strike" (Photo: Reuters).

12.46 Stock markets are trading higher this lunchtime. The FTSE 100 in London is still up 0.5pc at 5,657.09. The FTSE Mib in Milan is up 2pc, at 13,869.54, while the IBEX 35 in Madrid is up 1.5pc at 6,717.90.

Italian borrowing costs have edged up following this morning's bond auction. The yield on 10-year debt is back above 6pc, at 6.03pc, while Spanish 10-year yields have remained steady, at 6.6pc.

12.03 As German finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble prepares to meet US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on the island of Sylt today, Rachel Cooper reports on the growing number of embattled eurozone leaders holidaying in their own country or fairly close by:

The North Sea island, famed for its 40km sandy beach, might seem an unusual location for a pow-wow to discuss the spiralling debt crisis, but it is Mr Schaeuble's traditional holiday destination. Just off the German coast, near the Danish border, Sylt is the northernmost island of Germany and is known for its tourist resorts, particularly Westerland and Kampen.

Germany's chancellor, Angela Merkel, has left Berlin for her usual two-to-three-week break. She has been spotted at the Bayreuth Festival, the annual month-long celebration of Richard Wagner, and Bild reported that she will then travel with her husband to the Italian alpine region of South Tyrol, where she holidayed in the past two years.

In a nod to austerity, Mrs Merkel sported the same dress - a petrol-blue full-length gown - to the Bayreuth Festival that she wore to the same event four years ago.

11.39 The ECB announces the amount of debt it bought on the secondary market on its website every Monday at around 2.30pm. The last time it used the SMP was back in March.

11.36 More from JP Morgan:

Quote We expect no long-term positive impact on peripheral spreads from a resumption of SMP. This reflects several factors.

? First, we expect ECB implementation to remain half-hearted and reactive.

? Second, the impact on peripheral sovereign yields will likely be smaller this time due to the issue of private sector subordination, a point which was hammered home by the preferential treatment given to the ECB during Greek PSI.

? Third, Spain needs to significantly ramp up its issuance pace in order to cover its funding needs for the rest of the year. We estimate that Spain needs to nearly double its issuance pace going forward. These figures do not include potential funding needs due to support facilities announced for the Spanish regions.

? Fourth, secondary market selling pressure from non-domestic holders of Spanish debt will continue, as investors sell into the SMP bid due to lack of market demand elsewhere. Net, we expect these factors to outweigh the positive impact from ECB bond-buying over the long-term, especially if Spain gets downgraded to sub-investment grade later in the year, which is our base case.

11.31 Analysts at JP Morgan have also examined how much impact the ECB's bond buying programme would have if it was re-activated. Its conclusion? Not much:

Quote Since 2010, the ECB has accumulated a total portfolio of peripheral sovereign debt of around ?225bn, dominated by Italy, Greece and Spain (Exhibit 4). However, previous ECB attempts have been mainly reactive. That is, the ECB wants to defuse a crisis but also wants the fiscal authorities to ultimately bear the load. Thus, prior bouts of SMP buying have started out with a bang but tapered off significantly after 3-6 weeks. In late 2011 the ECB had to pick up the pace again when Italian and Spanish yields approached new highs; this also led to the introduction of 3Y LTROs in December.

11.08 The German government has "full confidence" in the ECB and sees no reason for legal action against the central bank.

Spokeswoman Georg Streiter was responding to comments made by German MP Joerg-Uwe Hahn this morning (see 09.21) that the government should sue the central bank over its purchases of peripheral debt.

Mr Streiter also said that the government's position on eurobonds remained unchanged, and shared debt liability was not in the country's interest.

10.49 Meanwhile, confidence across the eurozone slipped again in July, according to a monthly survey by the European Commission.

A fall in confidence across "all sectors" saw the EC's Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) for the eurozone fall to 87.9 in July (from 89.9), while the EU reading fell to 89.0 (from 90.4). This compares with a long run average of 100.

A "loss of confidence in the services sector" was the main driver of the fall in the EU, the EC said, while the euro area saw the biggest declines in industry and among consumers.

10.33 Commenting on the Italian auction, Annalisa Piazza at Newedge Strategy, said:

Quote Lower yields are good news for the Italian Tesoro and rising borrowing costs is one of the major threat for the Italian fiscal consolidation at the current juncture. However, the relatively low bid/cover ratios remain a sign that dealers are extremely suspicious on the recent tightening of EMU periphery's spreads. ECB policymakers sounded convinced that the re-activation of the SMP was needed in the near term as spiking spreads are a clear obstacle to the smooth transmission mechanism of the ECB monetary policy. However, the ECB meeting is a few days away and market participants are still reluctant on the possible outcome of the meeting and they seem to be concerned about a possible disappointment.

10.21 Italy has managed to sell medium and long term debt this morning at lower rates than at a previous auction in June.

The Treasury sold ?2.5bn of 10 year debt at average yields of 5.96pc, compared with 6.19pc at the last auction, ?2.24bn of five year debt at average rates of 5.29pc (vs. 5.84pc), and ?750m of three year debt at average yields of 4.49pc.

Demand remained steady, with around 1.3 bidders per bond on offer at the ten-year auction.

09.58 It's a week of meetings this week. Today, US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner meets German counterpart Wolfgang Schaeuble and ECB president Mario Draghi.

On Thursday, Italian PM Mario Monti will meet his Spanish counterpart Mariano Rajoy in Madrid.

In between all that, we'll get interest rate decisions on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Bank of England, ECB and Federal Reserve in America are all expected to keep interest rates on hold this week, despite calls from some economists to ease monetary policy further.

09.52 The Bank of England also said that mortgage approvals and lending slumped to its lowest level since December 2010 last month, reflecting broader economic weakness due to extra public holidays and wet weather.

09.47 The amount of money swirling around the financial system has collapsed to new lows.

The Bank of England figures showed that the UK's broad money supply, M4, shrank by 5.2pc on an annual basis in June to its lowest level since records began in 1983.

Commenting on the figures, Samuel Tombs at Capital Economics, said:

QuoteGiven our view that the euro-zone crisis is likely to intensify, thereby weakening UK banks, we continue to expect weak money and credit growth to undermine the pace of the economic recovery for some time to come.

09.29 Analysts at Societe Generale argue in a note this morning that even if the ECB was to restart its Securities Markets Programme (SMP), it would not lower peripheral borrowing costs over the long term:

QuoteRestarting the SMP purchases is another matter. The Bundesbank was never keen on the idea, yet this didn?t stop the ECB from relaunching the programme last August. Graph 1 shows that it was first launched in May 2010, then petering out, only to be restarted in August 2011 before petering out again. The bullish impetus only lasted a few days last August.

A repeat of August 2011 is possible, even if the Bundesbank drags its feet. Little does it matter to the investor who the official buyer is (EFSF or Eurosystem). Investors will just want to sell their holdings at prices perceived to be above market clearing levels compared to longer term prospects. So a buy programme will just result in a transfer of ownership. It will not have a durable impact on lower yields

But for now the threat of intervention can buy governments a little time, and contain spreads, or even push them tighter. Buying will at best be a palliative, not a game changer, though can still have a large near-term impact on markets, as August 2011 saw.

09.21 Not everyone is happy with the idea of the ECB going on a bond buying spree, and one member of Angela Merkel's junior coalition party has called on the German government to sue the central bank for hoovering up peripheral debt on the secondary market. Joerg-Uwe Hahn told Die Welt:

QuoteThe European treaties allow member states to sue the ECB [...] It's time to open the toolbox of the (EU's) Lisbon Treaty and see how one can ensure that the ECB is brought into line to focus on its original task: monetary stability.

08.52 Today's leader column in the Financial Times argues that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) should ask EU leaders for a refund on its loans to the indebted country and "confine its own role to giving open and honest assessments of the ensuing rescue attempt." More from the FT:

Quote...the longer the IMF participates in a rescue it does not itself believe in, the greater the cost will be to its reputation and support outside the eurozone. Should any writedown on its lending even be proposed, it would enrage other shareholders, including the US and the big emerging economies. Its implementation would be a disaster, raising costs for other borrowers and in effect crippling the institution.

On balance, the fund was right to take the risk of getting involved in Greece. It has offered unrivalled technical competence and has tried to inject a sense of reality into the proceedings. But the risks to its reputation have now begun to outweigh the limited good it has been doing. The eurozone has money. It needs an impartial and outspoken adviser, not a co-opted fellow creditor. The IMF should look at how to extricate itself from further bankrolling the Greek rescue.

08.34 Reports that the ECB could take losses on Greek debt have gained traction over the weekend.

Intensive discussions are now reportedly under way among EU policy-makers that could see the European Central Bank and a number of central banks take a significant write-down on their Greek bonds as the price for avoiding a eurozone break-up and losing its weakest link.

08.24 Spanish and Italian borrowing costs have also continued to fall.

Yields on Spanish and Italian 10-year debt are currently at 6.66pc and 5.88pc respectively.

08.20 It was Monti and Merkel's turn this weekend to promise do everything to protect the eurozone. And so far this morning, the comments by the German chancellor and Italian PM have kept markets in the black.

The FTSE 100 is up 0.3pc, at 5,643.09, while the CAC 40 in Paris is up 0.5pc at 3,296.64 and Frankfurt's DAX is up 0.7pc at 6,734.40. The IBEX 35 in Madrid is flat, at 6,619.10.

08.12 The eurozone has "no time to lose" (sound familiar?), and leaders "must make extremely clear with all available means that we are determined to ensure the financial stability of the currency union," Jean-Claude Juncker has said.

Mr Juncker, who leads the Eurogroup of finance ministers in the 17-nation bloc, told German daily S?ddeutsche Zeitung (translation by AP):

QuoteI don't want to raise expectations, but I must say that we have arrived at a decisive point [...] the euro countries have arrived a point where we must make extremely clear with all available means that we are determined to ensure the financial stability of the currency union.

I have no doubt that we will implement the decisions of the last summit [...] It still has to be decided what exactly we will do when. That depends on the developments of the coming days and how fast we have to react [...] and we will, as Draghi says, see results.

08.03 We wake to news this morning that the Spanish economy contracted by 0.4pc in the second quarter. This follows a 0.3pc contraction in the previous quarter. On an annual basis, the economy contracted by 1pc.

The figures affirm the Bank of Spain's forecasts earlier this month.

08.00 Good morning and welcome back to our live coverage of the European debt crisis.

Chinese politician Bo's wife charged with murder

BEIJING (AP) ? The wife of ousted Chinese politician Bo Xilai and a family aide have been charged with the murder of a British businessman, the government said Thursday, pushing ahead a case at the center of a messy political scandal that exposed divisions in China's leadership.

The official Xinhua News Agency reported that the prosecutor's indictment said Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, had a falling out with Briton Neil Heywood over money and worried that it would threaten her and their son's safety. Gu and the aide, Zhang Xiaojun, are alleged to have poisoned Heywood together, the report said. Heywood's death in November was attributed initially to a heart attack or excessive drinking.

They were charged in the eastern city of Hefei, Xinhua said. It did not say when exactly the indictment was issued or when the crime occurred and why the case is being prosecuted in Hefei and not in Chongqing, the metropolis Bo ran as Communist party secretary and where the couple lived.

Prosecutors have interrogated Bo and Zhang and have "heard the opinions" of their defense lawyers, Xinhua said.

The brief report is the first official news that the case against Gu is proceeding since the announcement three months ago that she and Zhang were being investigated and that Bo was being suspended from the powerful Politburo for unspecified discipline violations. The Xinhua report did not mention Bo's case or a separate party investigation into Bo.

The scandal exposed the bare-knuckled infighting that the secretive leadership prefers to hide and affirmed an already skeptical public's dim view about corrupt dealings in the party.

Before his ouster, Bo was one of China's most powerful and charismatic politicians. The son of a revolutionary veteran, Bo was seen as a leading candidate for a position in the Politburo Standing Committee, the highest ranks of power, when a younger group of leaders is installed later this year.

On his rise, Bo led high-profile campaigns to bust organized crime and to promote communist culture. In doing so, however, his administration ran roughshod over civil liberties that angered some leaders and alienated others with his publicity seeking.

Mauricio ?Shogun? Rua jumps out of a plane (VIDEO)

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua's first fight since his epic brawl with Dan Henderson will happen at UFC on Fox 4 on Aug. 4. What's the best way to prepare for the bout with Brandon Vera? Jumping out of an airplane, of course.

At no point does he look scared. Perhaps taking Jon Jones elbows and living to tell about it is a way to remove fear from jumping out of a plane. He made the jump on July 1, so he had plenty of time to recover before his bout next week in L.A.

Ride made history when she launched aboard the space shuttle Challenger on the STS-7 mission in 1983. She became only the third woman to ever travel in space, after Soviet cosmonauts Valentina Tereshkova in 1963 and Svetlana Savitskaya in 1982.

Ride traveled into space once more in 1984, as a member of the STS-41G crew on the space shuttle Challenger. Over the course of her career, Ride logged a total of 343 hours in space.

Sally Ride's death?came after 17 months of battling pancreatic cancer. Here are some tributes to Sally Ride from astronauts, scientists, historians, industry officials and other luminaries:

Barack Obama, President of the United States

Michelle and I were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of?Sally Ride. As the first American woman to travel into space, Sally was a national hero and a powerful role model. She inspired generations of young girls to reach for the stars and later fought tirelessly to help them get there by advocating for a greater focus on science and math in our schools. Sally?s life showed us that there are no limits to what we can achieve and I have no doubt that her legacy will endure for years to come. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sally?s family and friends.

Charles Bolden, NASA Administrator

Sally Ride broke barriers with grace and professionalism ? and literally changed the face of America's space program. The nation has lost one of its finest leaders, teachers and explorers. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sally's family and the many she inspired. She will be missed, but her star will always shine brightly. [Sally Ride: 1st American Woman in Space (Pictures)]

Lori Garver, NASA Deputy Administrator

Sally was a personal and professional role model to me and thousands of women around the world. Her spirit and determination will continue to be an inspiration for women everywhere.

Eileen M. Collins, former astronaut and space shuttle commander

I am surprised and saddened by the news of Sally Ride?s passing.?She was such a wonderful role model and source of inspiration to me.?People around the world still recognize her name as the first American woman in space, and she took that title seriously even after departing NASA.?

She mentored me several times during my astronaut career, leaving me with many cherished memories.?She never sought media attention for herself, but rather focused on doing her normally outstanding job.?Her ?Sally Ride Science? programs have reached thousands of middle school girls, giving them the confidence to stay focused on math and science, even when the mass media message was otherwise.?She also played a notable role in both the Challenger and Columbia accident investigations.?Sally left us too soon.?Godspeed Sally, you will be greatly missed.

Syria pledge on chemical weapons

Unverified footage shows jubilant rebels on the streets of Aleppo

Syria has said it will not use chemical weapons against its own people, but would do so against an external attack.

Acknowledging their existence for the first time, Damascus said the weapons, stored and secured by the armed forces, would never be used "inside Syria".

Rebels have told the BBC's Paul Wood in Syria that they are encouraged by the killing of four top security officials.

But the refugee crisis has deepened, and Iraq has announced it is opening its borders to help people flee.

An estimated 1.5 million people are homeless within Syria, according to the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, which says the number is rising.

'External aggression'

"Any chemical or biological weapons will never be used, I repeat, will never be used in the Syrian crisis, no matter what the internal developments in this crisis are," Mr Makdissi said, at a news conference broadcast on Syrian state TV.

"All varieties of these weapons are stored and secured by the Syrian armed forces and under its direct supervision, and will not be used unless Syria is subjected to external aggression."

Syria's chemical weapons

  • Fourth largest stockpile in the world
  • Programme active since 1980s, US believes
  • Initially three weapons production plants, including Al Safir southeast of Aleppo, which has been redeveloped in recent years
  • Chemical plants said to be active near Homs and Hama from early 1990s
  • Suspected stocks of mustard gas, sarin gas and VX nerve gas from late 1990s

Source: Janes, US State Department, International Institute for Strategic Studies

Until now, Syria has never officially confirmed it has chemical weapons. It is not a signatory to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), which outlaws production.

While Damascus's acknowledgement that it has such arms adds a new dimension, it is not in itself significant, says Leonard Spector of the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies in the US.

"This has been part of the military balance for decades," he has told the BBC news website.

The West and Israel have been deeply worried that Syria might use its stocks of chemical weapons, says the BBC's Jim Muir in neighbouring Lebanon.

On 16 July, the most senior Syrian politician to defect to the opposition told the BBC the government would not hesitate to use chemical weapons if it were cornered.

Nawaf al-Fares, Syria's former ambassador to Iraq, said unconfirmed reports indicated such weapons might have already been used.

However, the opposition has not reported any use of chemical weapons.

Aleppo offensive

Meanwhile, Arab League foreign ministers have urged President Assad to resign rapidly, offering him safe passage. They say the opposition should form a transitional government.

At the scene

After days of walking, we reach a town which is tenuously in rebel hands. But the town is ringed by Syrian artillery. It starts up at various times of the day, targeting the orchards where rebel fighters hide.

During a pause in the shelling, a couple of fighters drive me and our translator around town, describing some of their recent clashes with army forces.

The town is deserted now, with plenty of debris on the streets, burned out cars, big holes in the walls from mortars and shells. One or two people are walking about though, so it seems people are still here.

The assassinations in Damascus were a major blow to the regime, the men tell me, but it has retaliated by targeting civilians.

Rebels from the Free Syrian Army (FSA) told our correspondent undercover with them near Damascus that the once-feared secret police is now a spent force, and the government is relying entirely on a weakened military.

They say the deaths of four men, including the defence minister and President Assad's brother-in-law, in a Damascus bombing on 18 July, were a severe blow to the government.

But parts of the capital that had fallen into rebel hands have been recaptured by government forces.

State TV on Monday showed images of troops going house-to-house and kicking down doors in Damascus, searching for rebel fighters.

Continued clashes were reported in the northern city of Aleppo.

Rebels launched a new offensive at the weekend, vowing to take the city completely and use it as a base for liberating the whole country.

Videos posted online on Monday showed jubilant rebel fighters in the Sakhour district.

State TV played down the scale of the violence, saying troops were merely hunting down "terrorists".

Most of the refugees fleeing the Syrian conflict are children

The most senior Turkish diplomat remaining in Syria, the consul in Aleppo, has been withdrawn for consultations.

Turkey and Lebanon have taken in thousands of refugees in camps near the Syrian border and the UN refugee agency says its staff are building a camp in Jordan as well.

Around 1,000 people are arriving in Jordan every day and the agency says the site at Za'atri should be able to cope with more than 100,000 refugees.

Tighter sanctions

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton has announced another 20m euros for "emergency medical care, shelter, food and water to those Syrians most affected by the ever-worsening crisis, both inside and outside the country".

The aid coincided with a decision by EU foreign ministers to tighten EU sanctions on the Syrian government.

EU member states will be required to send inspectors to board planes and ships on their territory believed to be carrying weapons or suspicious supplies to Damascus.

UK Foreign Secretary William Hague called for more support for the opposition, "including helping them prepare for Syria after Assad".

Russian airline Aeroflot is to end flights to Damascus from 6 August, citing lack of demand.

On Sunday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that at least 19,106 people had been killed since March 2011. The UN said in May that at least 10,000 people had been killed.

Syria blames the violence on foreign-backed "armed terrorist gangs".

In June, the Syrian government reported that 6,947 Syrians had died, including at least 3,211 civilians and 2,566 security forces personnel.

Batman victim had escaped Toronto shooting

Jessica Ghawi had escaped a mall shooting in Toronto weeks ago when an "odd feeling" led her outside, and then blogged about how fortunate she was.

But in an ironic and tragic twist of fate, Ghawi died in Friday's Colorado theater shooting spree, one of 12 fatalities in the mass killing.

Ghawi, a sports blogger who had aspirations of becoming a television reporter, had moved from Texas to Colorado to pursue her career and adopted the pen name Jessica Redfield.

Her final moments were chronicled in a series of Twitter messages, including one just before the deadly shooting spree, and in a blog post by her brother.

"MOVIE DOESN'T START FOR 20 MINUTES," she tweeted just ahead of the shooting early Friday at a packed premiere of the latest Batman movie in the Denver area that killed at least 12 people and left around 40 others wounded.

Hours earlier, she had a Twitter conversation with colleague Jesse Spector about the film. She wrote, "@jessespector you aren't seeing it tonight?!" When he replied "Nope" she tweeted back, "psh. Loser!"

The victim's brother, Jordan Ghawi, wrote a blog post describing his learning the news.

"At approximately 0215 CST, I received an hysterical, and almost unintelligible, phone call from my mother stating that my sister, Jessica Ghawi, had been shot while attending the midnight showing of 'The Dark Knight Rises' in Denver, CO," he said.

"I was able to contact the man that was with my sister, mutual friend Brent Lowak, who stated that they were in the theater when an incendiary device was fired into the crowd and that shots rang out immediately afterwards," he added.

"Brent further stated that he took two rounds and that my sister took one round followed by an additional round, which appeared to strike her in the head."

He later updated the account after speaking with Lowak:

"Jessica and Brent were seated in the middle portion of the theatre when a device was thrown into the theatre that produced a 'hissing' sound," he said in the blog.

"The theatre than began to fill with smoke which is when patrons began to move from their seats. At that time, shots were fired... Brent then heard Jessica scream and noticed that she was struck by a round in the leg.

"Brent, began holding pressure on the wound and attempted to calm Jessica... While still administering first aid, Brent noticed that Jessica was no longer screaming."

Lowak told the brother that he "saw what appeared to be an entry wound to her head" before she died, and he then escaped. "Brent's actions are nothing but heroic," Jordan Ghawi wrote.

Ghawi recently moved to Denver from San Antonio.

"You can find me in the TV studio, NHL arena/locker room, on a plane, or writing. Southern. Sarcastic. Sass.Class.Crass. Grammar snob," said her Twitter profile.

The killing prompted an outpouring of grief and sympathy from friends and colleagues.

"My friend Jessica Ghawi was killed in the #Aurora Shooting - she was an aspiring sportscaster - she will be missed," wrote television journalist Natalie Tejeda.

"I want her to be remembered as an amazing, vivacious, feisty woman!"

Ghawi, who wrote a hockey blog under the name Jessica Redfield, calling herself "Pucktress," and had commented about last month's Toronto shooting in a June 5 blog post.

"This empty, almost sickening feeling won't go away," she wrote.

"An odd feeling which led me to go outside and unknowingly out of harm's way. It's hard for me to wrap my mind around how a weird feeling saved me from being in the middle of a deadly shooting," she added.

"I say all the time that every moment we have to live our life is a blessing. So often I have found myself taking it for granted.

"Every hug from a family member. Every laugh we share with friends. Even the times of solitude are all blessings. Every second of every day is a gift."

Mourning Ghawi, Spector tweeted: "Words are useless. Guns more so. If you ever had any interaction with @JessicaRedfield, you know the world is much worse off without her."

Reporter explores dark world of online weapons trade

14 hrs.

"I couldn't believe what I?was looking at," Sam Biddle, a reporter for the?tech blog Gizmodo, exclaimed to me?while describing his exploration of?a "secret online weapons store that'll sell anyone anything."

Biddle?? with whom I briefly?worked during my time at Gizmodo ? just wrapped up a month of research, which led to a detailed, engaging account of his attempts to outfit?"a 20-person paramilitary group to overthrow a West African government in a Internet-armed coup d'?tat."

Of course, Biddle doesn't actually head up?a paramilitary strike force, nor is he attempting to overthrow any regimes. Instead he was trying to see if there really are people out there willing to sell an?anonymous?stranger a pile of weapons without blinking an eye, let alone asking for a background check.

Biddle found his answer in a virtual black market called "The Armory." It's difficult to access and nearly impossible to trace, he says.?Purchases there require Bitcoin, an electronic currency.

What's not required?? or ever, ever discussed?? are?details about buyers and sellers. Biddle entered this underworld under the alias "triadische2." (While that may ring sinister in an old-school Bond?villain fashion, the name was actually?inspired by an antique poster given to Biddle by his mother???promoting?a ballet company.?"I didn't want to be 'gundude2000,'" he told me.)

Choosing a faux identity is much simpler than making a purchase, mind you. Once you wiggle your way through the software hurdles and encryption layers required to even locate the gun mart, find the wares you want, negotiate with a seller, and transfer Bitcoin, you still have to receive an actual shipment of guns ? in real life. As Biddle reveals:

That receiving part is almost as tricky as the labyrinthine purchasing process. How exactly do you illegally ship illegal guns to potential criminals? In pieces. Small pieces. The crafty gun dealers of The Armory aren't going to just stick an assault rifle into a manilla envelope and drop it into a local mailbox. Rather, buyers get each gun component shipped in shielded packages???disguised to look like other products???that then require self-assembly. You get your gun, the dealer gets his money, The Armory retains its secrecy, and the mail carrier doesn't realize it's part of an international weapons smuggling operation.

Slightly scary, no?

Your neighbor?? the one who keeps receiving mail-order shipments?? could easily be putting together a tank in his basement, piece by little piece, thanks to the Internet.

Of course, these activities won't go unnoticed forever. A spokesperson for the?for Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) told me, in no uncertain terms, that the law enforcement agency is "aware that there are illegal activities on the Internet" and that it has "people investigating it."

Unfortunately, as Biddle himself found earlier, the ATF was unable to confirm whether the specific online shop visited by Biddle is the subject of an investigation or not, as it could put the investigation?? if there is one?? at risk.

I suspect that might make Biddle frown. His final thought when we spoke, was about how much he'd love to see law enforcement read his report and swing into action.

Read Biddle's full story over?at Gizmodo.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.
