Fungi found in plants may not be the answer to mitigating climate change by storing additional carbon in soils as some previously thought, according to an international team of plant biologists.

The researchers found that increased carbon dioxide stimulates the growth of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) -- a type of fungus that is often found in the roots of most land plants -- which then leads to higher decomposition rates of organic materials, said Lei Cheng, post doctorate fellow in plant science, Penn State. This decomposition releases more carbon dioxide back into the air, which means that terrestrial ecosystems may have limited capacity to halt climate change by cleaning up excessive greenhouse gases, according to the researchers.

"Prior to our study, there have been few studies on whether elevated levels of carbon dioxide would stimulate organic carbon decomposition through AMF," said Cheng.

To study the effect of higher levels of carbon dioxide on AMF-mediated decomposition, the researchers conducted four experiments, two in greenhouses and two in fields to mimic the earth's expected North American atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide. They studied plots of a wild oat species, which is native to Eurasia and now common in North American grasslands, and wheat.

In the experiments, one plot was treated with AMF, the other did not have the fungus. Both plots were exposed to higher than currently existing carbon dioxide levels. After a ten-week gestation period, the sample of plants with AMF had 9 percent less carbon in the soil than the plot that was not treated with AMF, indicating that the carbon was released back into the atmosphere.

"Basically, we showed that elevated carbon dioxide increases carbon allocation to AMF to increase plant nitrogen uptake, and higher AMF facilitate organic residue decomposition which releases carbon dioxide into the air," said Cheng.

Elevated levels of carbon dioxide did significantly increase the size of the AMF colonies and carbon allocation underground, according to the researchers, who released their findings in the Aug. 30 issue of Science. However, the storage of carbon is offset by the role of AMF in facilitating decomposition.

"We used to think that this excess carbon would be sequestered in the soil," said Cheng. "So, that could help mitigate climate change, but it doesn't appear to be so."

They also studied the effect on a wheat and soybean field. In this experiment, Cheng said elevated levels of carbon dioxide increased both the size of AMF colonies and decomposition.

AMF colonies, which are found in the roots of 80 percent of land plant species, play a critical role in the earth's carbon cycle. The fungus receives and stores carbon -- a byproduct of the plant's photosynthesis -- from its host plant in its long vein-like structures. A plant stores about 20 percent of its carbon in AMF, according to Cheng.

AMF also help the plant capture nutrients, such as phosphorus and nitrogen.

"We found that, under elevated carbon dioxide levels, AMF supply more nitrogen to their host plants by acquiring ammonium directly from decomposing residues," Cheng said. "So the good news is that AMF's role in the plant's nitrogen uptake may open up the possibility of keeping carbon in the soil."

When there are higher carbon dioxide levels, the plant's ability to take in nitrates is inhibited and it then adds more carbon to fungi like AMF to acquire ammonium, said Cheng. The management of soil nitrogen transformations may provide a promising strategy of restoring levels of carbon sequestration under higher carbon dioxide conditions.

Battle for Online Gaming Heats up | Gambling News

WELLINGTON, New Zealand, Aug. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- With a record number of states exploring options to raise revenue and decrease overwhelming budget deficits, online gaming is being looked at as a realistic and proven way to potentially raise billions of much needed funds. High Tide Investments, Ltd, based out of New Zealand, controls numerous domains including www.seminolecasino.com and www.seminolegaming.com and predicts a change in the court of public opinion towards legal online gaming. On Monday, 8-27-2012 they took their message to the public with an appearance in Times Square: http://videostorage.prnewswire.com/storage2/photos/REMNANT-WANNA-BLUF.jpg

A spokesperson for the company said, "Most states are looking for ways to pare expenses and raise revenues. But once again preferential treatment is given to Native American Tribes by lobbyists and politicians. Legal Gaming addresses this issue along with others. Not only is it a significant new revenue stream, but it is also rapidly deployed once legislation is in place to allow it. Billions of dollars are currently going off shore to other nations who offer online gaming and it only makes sense to capture lost revenue and benefit from new consumers that would prefer to game from the comforts of home."

The internet has leveled the playing field for all states. Those that currently have physical gaming likely have an advantage in securing online gaming, but truly, any state can oversee and regulate web based gaming. Many advocates and even the opposition are in agreement that it's not a question of "if" but "when" legal online gaming will return and states should consider the tax revenue that Native American Tribes would pay vs Private gaming enterprises.

U.S. guard pleads guilty to trying to pass secrets to China

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A former security guard at a U.S. consulate in China pleaded guilty on Thursday to trying to pass secrets to China, including photographs of the U.S. building site, prosecutors said.

Bryan Underwood, 32, planned to sell information about the U.S. consulate being built in Guangzhou to China's Ministry of State Security for $3 million to $5 million, the U.S. Attorney's office said in a statement.

Underwood, a former contract civilian guard, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Washington to one count of attempting to communicate national defense information to a foreign government.

Underwood was arrested on the run by FBI agents in Los Angeles in September 2011 after initial charges that he lied about why he was taking photos of the consulate.

Underwood, a former Indiana resident, had worked as a guard at the consulate construction site from November 2009 to August 2011. He planned to sell the photos and other information after he was hit by stock market reverses, the statement said.

Underwood faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. Sentencing is set for November 19.

U.S. prosecutors have brought charges against numerous people over the years who have tried to spy for China. They include some who sought money in exchange for economic or national security-related information.

Verizon and Leap Wireless announce $120 million spectrum swap in wake of FCC approval

Go ahead and put a bow on it, as Verizon Wireless and Leap Wireless (the parent company of Cricket), have announced a successful spectrum swap. The agreement follows the recent stamp of approval from the FCC, which was issued as part of a larger deal between Verizon Wireless, SpectrumCo and Cox. For its part, Leap will divest itself of excess AWS and PCS spectrum across the US; in exchange, Verizon will pay $120 million to Leap and provide it with 12MHz of A Block 700MHz spectrum in Chicago. Leap will use the new holdings to supplement its existing 10MHz of the A Block within the Windy City, and will use the cash to build up its LTE infrastructure across the US. The company currently expects to provide LTE coverage to at least two-thirds of Cricket's current footprint over the next three years -- or, maybe sooner. Just check the PR to watch the company waffle.

Genome of diploid cotton sequenced

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? he international research team led by Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and BGI have completed the genome sequence and analysis of a diploid cotton-- Gossypium raimondii. The cotton genome provides an invaluable resource for the study and genetic improvement of cotton quality and output, and sheds new lights on understanding the genetic characteristics and evolutionary mechanism underlying cotton and its close relatives.

The study was published online in Nature Genetics.

Cotton, also known as "white gold," is an important cash crop worldwide. Its fiber is one of the oldest fibers under human cultivation, which traces over 7,000 years old recovered from archaeological sites. The cotton production provides income for approximately 100 million families, and approximately 150 countries are involved in cotton import and export. Additionally, in scientific research, cotton also serves as an excellent model system for studying polyploidization, cell elongation and cell wall biosynthesis.

In this study, researchers sequenced the genome of G. raimondii by the next-generation sequencing technology, yielding a draft cotton genome with 103.6-fold genome coverage. Over 73% of the assembled sequences were anchored on 13 G. raimondii chromosomes. They identified 2,355 syntenic blocks in the G. raimondii genome, and found that approximately 40% of the paralogous genes were present in more than 1 block, which suggests that this cotton genome has undergone substantial chromosome rearrangement during its evolution.

Through comprehensive comparison and analysis, researchers observed that one paleohexaploidization event occurred in the G. raimondii genome at approximately 130.8 million years ago, while the event is commonly found in eudicots. They also found the evidence to support a cotton-specific whole-genome duplication event occurred at approximately 13-20million years ago.

Cotton is known to produce a unique group of terpenoids such as gossypol. The accumulated gossypol and related sesquiterpenoids produced by cotton in pigment glands can be as a resistance against pathogens and herbivores. The majority of cotton sesquiterpenoids are derived from a common precursor which is synthesized by (+)- ? -cadinene synthase (CDN) in gossypol biosynthesis. Through the phylogenetic analysis on G. raimondii and eight other sequenced plant genomes, they found that the cotton, and probably Theobroma cacao, were the only sequenced plant species that possess an authentic CDN1 gene family for gossypol biosynthesis.

Furthermore, the transcriptomic comparison between the fiber-bearing G. hirsutum and the non-fibered G. raimondii demonstrated that three synthases are important for cotton fiber development, including sucrose synthase (Sus), 3-ketoacyl-CoA synthase (KCS) and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid oxidase (ACO). Meanwhile, the MYB and bHLH transcription factors preferentially expressed in fiber may be useful to explain the molecular mechanisms that are in charge of governing fiber initiation and early cell growth.

Zhiwen Wang, Project Manager at BGI, said, "The completed G.raimondii genome provides a good reference for accelerating the genomic research on tetraploid cotton species such as G. hirsutum and G. barbadense. It also will lay a solid foundation for researchers to further boost cotton quality and productivity by comprehensively exploring the genetic mechanisms underlying cotton fiber initiation, gossypol biosynthesis and resistance against pathogens and herbivores."

Easy Home Improvement Tricks You Can Try Today | Home ...

Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned vet, improving your home will improve your life. A home is truly a reflection of yourself. The information in this article is aimed at giving you ideas of things you can do to make your home, and consequently your life, better.

Put ceiling fans up in rooms that are used a lot since this will increase the circulation. Fans can help refrain air conditioning during the summer and lower heating costs in the winter. Fans typically can be switched so that they either draw or near air as needed.

Most people know about ?planting a tree for the future?. You can plant trees to grow the value of your property that your home sits on. Each single tree you plant that reaches its full size can increase the value of your home by a whopping $1000!

When you place in new woodworking in your kitchen or bathroom, it?s essential that each compartment is screwed in tight to their respective surround studs. Find the surround studs before you begin installing the cabinets so you know where the screws need to be placed. All you need is a cheap stud finder that you can pickup at your local hardware store.

Railings look good and wage safety. Key areas for railing are entrance ways, decks, platforms, sidewalks, balconies and stairways. Railings are important to have in case there are children or elders around. You can build or buy railings in a variety of materials, including copper, steel, wrought iron, cables, wood and even glass. Put in new railing to enhance your home and make it safer.

The bathroom is a very important part of a home that?s being sold. Living rooms and bedrooms are quite changeable by the new occupants of the home, but a bathroom is far more pricey to update, so it needs to be in good shape from the start. If the tub or sink are not in good condition, replace them right away. If the floors are linoleum, swap it out for tile.

When ever your home is in need of any electrical improvements, think about hiring a professional to take care of it. Professionals are aware of what is ideal and how to do it properly. You might create a larger problem if you try to do these repairs on your own.

Take note of easily noticeable improvements when making home changes. Potential buyers will not have any choice, except to judge your place by what is visible. This includes features like overgrown hedges and peeling paint, which can cost you sales. Even though cosmetic improvements are not usually the most vital improvements, when the goal is the understanding of your house, they are!

If you live near a busy street, think about getting some soundproof material installed into your walls. Select carefully which walls to soundproof, as it can become quite expensive. Bedrooms, bathrooms and equipment rooms are the most vital rooms to soundproof. The kitchen might also benefit from soundproofing, provided it is not part of an open concept home.

In the end, you will feel quite chesty of having improved your home on your own. Nobody wants to reside in a home desperately needing renovations. This info should help you get your home back to somewhere you want to be.

The Real Estate Gamble - Unlimited 401K/IRA LLC by Dimension ...

Posted on August 22, 2012 by Stuart Robles

Investing in real estate has made headlines lately, but many have discovered that this is not the perfect investment opportunity, even though real estate is currently believed to be undervalued by conventional wisdom.

Maintenance Costs

Unfortunately, investment real estate comes with a great deal of risk that the typical person is not usually prepared for. Maintenance costs with single family homes and multiunits have proved to be the undoing of many real estate investors. Many simply assume that maintenance costs will be similar to their primary residence.

In fact, a tenant can cost a landlord much more than predicted. Tenants tend not to keep up with general repairs, and often let minor issues progress without reporting them. In the case of an eviction, an investor has to contend with both a loss of rent money and the threat of vandalism. Expect appliances to wear out faster and cosmetic items such as carpets and paint, to need replacement more often.

Professional property management companies are usually experienced with mitigating these costs, but for an individual investor the cost of one of these management teams will often eat through any profits seen by the property.

Common, Yet Avoidable Mistakes

Real property has been the cornerstone of wealth for thousands of years. Its uses and value are tangible and relatively understandable. While ill-informed speculators have fled real estate because of the housing bust, intelligent real estate investors are enjoying immense profits by expanding their geographic scope and investing for predictable income.

Colsaerts targets Ryder Cup wildcard place

Belgium's Nicolas Colsaerts believes his good form this season is deserving of a Ryder Cup wildcard selection.

Colsaerts, 29, is the only player competing in this final week of European team qualifying who can make it into Jose Maria Olazabal's side for the Ryder Cup which takes place at Medinah in Illinois from September 28-30.

The Brussels-born player is currently lying 12th on the points table, one spot behind England's Ian Poulter.

But while Poulter will look to be a certain wildcard pick, Colsaerts can break into the team by finishing first or second in the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.

"I have adopted the best way to go about it -- be very humble," said Colsaerts.

"I know Ollie (Olazabal) has been around for so many years. He's been to so many Ryder Cups that he's got all the scenarios covered regardless of what I do.

"You're only looking at two or three options, so it's quite simple. But what I've done I've showed basically everything I could have done to get the pick.

"Fortunately, I still have a way to get myself in, but I'd like to think that I'm in a pretty good position."

Colsaerts commenced his 12th season in the pro ranks with a fourth in the Volvo Champions event in January ahead of back-to-back top-10s in Qatar and Dubai.

He was then third in Sicily and runner-up in the defence of his Volvo China Open title before a seventh in the Spanish Open.

Colsaerts then capped his career in defeating former US Open champion, Graeme McDowell, in the final of the Volvo World Match-Play Championship.

Since then Colsaerts has finished 11th in the French Open and joint seventh in the British Open after failing to qualify since 2005.

"I've crossed paths with Ollie in the locker room, and it's funny, because he told me with a big smile, 'I'm watching you'," said Colsaerts.

"I was pretty honest with him and I told him it was very difficult to play without thinking about it.

"When you want something like that for such a long time, and you've never been in this position before, it's very difficult. I have been thinking about it all the time, simple.

"It's like there's not 15 minutes during any day where I don't think about it."

If successful in securing a wildcard, and should Poulter also be given a pick, then Colsaerts would be the only rookie heading to Medinah.

UT Southwestern Medical Center

DALLAS Aug. 20, 2012 UT Southwestern Medical Center physicians will oversee the health needs of the Dallas Stars as the team's official medical provider, marking the first time a single organization has managed the entire spectrum of medical care for the National Hockey League club.

This collaboration expands the longstanding relationship between the Stars and UT Southwestern, whose plastic surgeons and neuropsychologists have been part of the club's medical team for a decade. Faculty physicians from the medical center now will serve as team doctors and manage the full range of health care needs for the players, including the evaluation and treatment of injuries on and off the ice.

"We are excited about the opportunity to provide comprehensive medical care to the Stars through the breadth and depth of our expertise across the health care spectrum," said Dr. Bruce Meyer, executive vice president of health system affairs. "This professional sports partnership demonstrates the high level of health care that we are able to deliver in an academic medical center."

Frank Provenzano, assistant general manager of the Stars, said: "Since arriving in Dallas 20 years ago, the Dallas Stars have had a history of exceptional medical care provided to our athletes and staff. We look forward to continuing this tradition for our organization through the partnership with UT Southwestern. They bring a depth of expertise and passion for hockey and the Stars."

Two UT Southwestern physicians with far-reaching experience as sports-medicine specialists will lead the Stars' medical team. They are:

  • Dr. Robert Dimeff, a professor with appointments in orthopaedic surgery, family and community medicine, and pediatrics. He also is the medical director of sports medicine at UT Southwestern. Dr. Dimeff will serve as the director of medical services and team physician for the Stars. Dr. Dimeff is a former head team physician for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association and for the National Football League's Cleveland Browns. He is past president of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians
  • Dr. William Robertson, an assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery and chief of the sports medicine and shoulder service at UT Southwestern. He will serve as the Stars' head team physician. The former all-Ivy League football player at Brown University previously served on the medical staff of the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball, the New England Patriots of the NFL, and the NHL's Boston Bruins.

"One of the advantages of being in an academic medical center is that we have a large number of highly skilled and renowned specialists under one roof," Dr. Dimeff said. "That makes our communication and coordination of care more efficient and cost-effective."

The UT Southwestern medical team present at every Stars home game will include a primary care sports-medicine physician, orthopaedic sports surgeon, emergency-medicine specialist, dentist, and plastic surgeon. A full range of UT Southwestern medical and surgical specialists also will be available for consultation and medical services as needed.

"We have a deep bench of accomplished physicians across all specialties," Dr. Robertson said. "Our team will provide the same outstanding clinical care to the Stars that we give to the patients we see every day."

UT Southwestern will be visible on the Dallas Stars practice jerseys beginning next season. Physicians will work with the Stars to promote healthy messages and sports medicine tips for fans through "Hockey Pulse," found on Dallasstars.com, and also will take part in the NHL's "Hockey Fights Cancer" initiative.

Keep Track Of Real Estate Prices By Buying Home And Property ...

If ever the time comes for you to buy a property, it is important that you hold all of the necessary information in your hands to be certain that you?re getting a good deal. Naturally, you can generally enlist the expertise of experts and property brokers, but conducting a little analysis yourself or getting a property report that lists a neighbourhood or street?s real estate prices may also assist you throughout the entire process of purchasing a house.

What exactly are property reports and how can they offer some assistance? For starters, the data contained within a property report is not really constrained merely to that of the property you?re thinking about buying. Such reports also list data in your chosen location, along with sales histories of nearby houses. You will find different types of reports depending on the scope; reports can include information regarding individual properties, or sales of properties along a certain street, and even sales histories within a wider area, say for example a whole suburb. Monitoring real estate prices by utilising such reports provides a multitude of benefits for homebuyers, such as:

Letting you get a house in your preferred suburb or neighbourhood that will fit your price range ? When you already have on your mind a certain location where you wish to purchase a house, then you can very easily narrow down your options by looking through suburb reports. With such a report, you?ll be able to examine and review diverse areas, primarily since not all the locations in the exact same suburb have the similar values. Various areas list properties at a higher selling price, while you can find places whose real estate prices are definitely more within your price range. And once you have isolated a specific street that suits your financial budget preferences, you can then turn to street reports so you can evaluate prices among the houses there and find the perfect one that your budget can accommodate.

Giving you an advantage while in negotiations ? Getting a real estate property report from a reliable real estate database service will let you reply to the following questions: What is the highest price paid out for a property in that street? What about the lowest? What is the median price for houses with identical attributes to the one you?re intending on purchasing? Knowing the answers to these questions can help you establish the lowest price you can work out with the seller. You do not even have to have the lowest price possible to reap the benefits offered by property reports. Simply having information readily available can stop you from spending past the worth of the house. For example, in case you are purchasing a house through auctions, you can utilise the highest real estate prices mentioned in the report as your ceiling price when putting in a bid.

If you?re wondering what real estate investment reports are, they are essentially documents that offer information regarding a property?s sales background together with other information that may be applicable when purchasing real estate. An individual report goes beyond basically describing a house; such documents present you with information about past sales and prices for the house, as well as the prices for which the property was offered for sale.

{Big Boy Room} The Re-do: From Toddler to ... - House of Rose

Otherwise titled ?My P Man is Growing Up?.?

boy transportation room

I mean, really, when did my baby get so dang big? He?s old enough to pick out his OWN room decor?? This seems so incredibly wrong to me.

Thankfully, he trusts his momma?s decorating skills and only had one {actually two} requests when it was time to update his room to ?big boy? style?

?A CHALKBOARD WALL AND A 42? FLAT SCREEN TV.?

Small demands from a five year old, wouldn?t-cha say?

The chalkboard wall was quite easy. And cheap too.

The 42? flat screen?

Who does this kid think he is!

boy room ideas

I didn?t have a 42? flat screen tv in my bedroom until 3 years ago.

I?m hoping his next request isn?t a pony because I clearly can?t follow through on that one.

Ahem.

For now I am hoping the Mr. Stiltz {the giraffe}?is good enough.

I adore this picture {taken by KPP} hanging on the left as you enter his room. It captures his personality to a tee!

His bedding is Dwell Studio Transportation.

I really like that it?s modern and boyish at the same time without being superhero-y.

I?m not hating on superheros. Or maybe I am.

My dad helped me create this wall art {inspired by Pinterest of course}.

boy room ideas transportation bed

I will add the tutorial in a separate post!

One of my favorite parts of his room is his school desk. This past year they tore down my old high school to build a new one. They decided to auction off EVERYTHING inside and this little desk is a gem I got at the auction {for like $15}.

Now hopefully I will be able to get him to do his homework at it.

This piece of wall art is another DIY canvas project by me. Similar to my first canvas tutorial, but this time I used a fun transportation stencil!

I forgot to mention that the cute cubby thing {holding all my son?s ?friends?}?also made by my dad.

We painted it white, but trimmed it out in a light colored wood. Love the contrast!

I found this wall stencil on Etsy by searching growth chart wall decal. You can find the exact one here.

This chair has been a save-all! I ordered it from PBK and my son uses it EVERY single day.

Mainly to watch his lovely 42? flat screen. :)

I really need to update this picture of P when he was one grabbing his fat belly, but I just can?t bring myself to do it yet. I?m waiting for him to insist that I take it down?but until then?it shall remain up!

There you have it! P?s bedroom re-do?big boy style!

Orb Audio Super Eight

By Jamie Lendino

The Orb Audio Super Eight ($399 direct) is a powerful subwoofer packed into a relatively small 12-inch cube. The company designed the Super Eight as a companion for its Mod1 satellite speakers and Orb Audio Booster stereo amplifier, which features a dedicated subwoofer out and a two-position crossover that's ideally suited to blending with the Super Eight. But the Super Eight should also have no problem working with any number of small monitors on the market, either in a 2.1 (stereo) or 5.1 (home theater) configuration, thanks to its own continually variable crossover. The best part: You get thunderous, punchy bass response that can shake a small or medium-sized room quite easily.

Design and Controls
The Super Eight isn't quite a 12-inch cube, to be precise. It actually measures 12 by 11.75 by 11.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 26 pounds. The circular fabric grille is held on with a series of strong magnets, which is a nice touch, so you won't accidentally break off a plastic post over time. Rather than using an inexpensive driver and a large enclosure, Orb Audio went with a small enclosure and a more powerful amplifier and robust speaker driver. This makes the Super Eight fairly easy to place in your room, as it isn't quite the eyesore it could have been.Orb Audio Super Eight

The back panel is well organized, and includes all the controls you could ever need. There are volume and adjustable crossover knobs, the latter with a useful range of 40 to 160Hz and a reasonably steep 12dB/octave high-pass circuit. A phase switch lets you swap polarity 180 degrees, and the power switch includes an Auto setting to conserve electricity in addition to On and Off positions. It includes a full complement of gold-plated speaker cable binding posts, but you shouldn't need these unless your receiver or amplifier lacks a proper RCA subwoofer out.

I would have loved to see a remote control, which is a fairly luxurious feature for a subwoofer but makes it much easier to position and tune properly; fortunately, Orb Audio's manual helps with this somewhat arcane process.?Orb Audio manufactures the Super Eight right here in the U.S. The company promises a 30-day home trial and just $9 for shipping costs. That makes it easy to audition the Super Eight in your home. And trust us: You'll want to.

Performance and Conclusions
The Super Eight features a long-throw, 8-inch woofer made of a mixture of treated composite paper and high-density ABS plastic, along with a massive 30-ounce ferrite magnet. The 200-watt digital switching amplifier is built into the enclosure. Orb Audio rates the Super Eight at 28-180Hz, but without a plus-or-minus dB figure, that rating is essentially meaningless. Temperature protect circuitry ensures the sub won't ever overheat or damage itself. With a continuous maximum output rating of 107dB, and 111dB short peaks, the sub delivers plenty of punch in small- to medium-sized rooms.

With the Super Eight engaged as part of the Mod1 system, overall sound was exemplary. Using our standard test track for electronic bass response, The Knife's "Silent Shout," the Super Eight delivered an appropriately tight 808 kick drum with a serious tail after each hit, exactly as it should be. In Muse's "Uprising" and the band's more electronic-inspired "Undisclosed Desires," the powerful low end had plenty of punch, and I could still easily distinguish the electric bass guitar from the acoustic kick drum.

Should you need still more low-end, Orb Audio also sells the Uber Ten, which contains a 10-inch woofer and 300-watt amplifier, and is roughly an inch and a half larger on all sides. The Uber Ten is much more pricey at $699?almost twice what the Super Eight costs?but could be a reasonable choice for larger living rooms and family rooms. We didn't test the Uber Ten, but the Super Eight is an excellent performer nonetheless. Even at $399, our biggest issue is price; while the same-price Energy Take 5.1 Classic's subwoofer isn't quite as extended as the Super Eight, it still gets pretty loud and sounds sufficiently tight and detailed, and you get a package of five satellite speakers in the bargain. To duplicate that with five Mod1s, you'd have to spend another $529 for the Mod1 Quick Pack.

Ford brings hybrid, EV work in-house to beat Toyota

(Reuters) - Ford Motor Co, vying to beat Toyota Motor Co's record on fuel economy, is accelerating development of its hybrid and electric vehicles by bringing the design and production of key components in-house.

The No.2 U.S. automaker said Wednesday it will spend $135 million to design parts for its next wave of electrified vehicles and double its battery testing capability by next year.

This summer, Ford began building its own hybrid transmission. More than 1,000 Ford engineers are devoted to advanced vehicle development and Ford plans to hire more.

These efforts allow Ford to complete projects more swiftly and cut overall development costs, executives said. They also allow Ford to react more nimbly to changes in consumer demand.

"We're not wed to any one specific technology," said Kevin Layden, head of electrification programs and engineering. "I'm free to play the field and I'm very comfortable with that."

Improving fuel economy is a cornerstone of Ford's vehicle strategy. Ford expects hybrids, plug-in hybrids and EVs will account for as much as 25 percent of its global sales by 2020.

Ford this year is launching five electrified vehicles, including hybrid versions of the Fusion midsize sedan and C-Max crossover. The C-Max gets 47 miles per gallon, beating the Toyota Prius V, which gets 44 miles per gallon.

But Ford still lags far behind Toyota, which has dominated the market with its Prius hybrid family. So far this year, the Toyota brand has accounted for two-thirds of the U.S. hybrid and EV market, while the Ford brand represents 3 percent, according to Edmunds.com.

The high cost of batteries and electric drive components represents another challenge. To combat that, Ford, like other automakers, is increasingly looking to maximize the number of models and parts that can be built on a single line.

For example, Ford now builds a hybrid transmission at its Van Dyke Transmission Plant near Detroit. On one side of an aluminum palette, workers build a conventional six-speed automatic transmission. On the other side is the hybrid version.

Ford previously bought these transmissions from Japanese parts supplier Aisin. Bringing production in-house allowed Ford to shave 20 percent from development costs, partly by saving on shipping and component costs. The model also gives Ford the choice to build more or less depending on demand.

"It's not just cost savings. It's market opportunity as well," said David Cole, chairman emeritus for the Center for Automotive Research. "If your competitor has products but you don't, that's a problem."

Ford is also seeing savings from bringing battery design and testing internally after relying heavily on outside suppliers to design and test batteries for its earliest hybrids.

The expansion of battery testing allows Ford to finish projects at least 25 percent faster than with the previous generation of hybrid and electric vehicles.

The automaker said its current hybrid system costs 30 percent less than the previous version. The new system relies on a more-efficient lithium-ion battery, while the Ford's original Escape SUV hybrid used a nickel-metal hydride battery.

"Onion Field" killer dies in California prison at 79

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Convicted murderer Gregory Powell, who kidnapped two Los Angeles police officers and killed one of them in 1963, a crime chronicled in the book and film "The Onion Field," has died in prison at the age of 79.

Powell, who was serving a life sentence in prison for the murder of officer Ian Campbell, died of natural causes on Sunday, said California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesman Lieutenant Andre Gonzales.

Gonzales said Powell died at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, about 30 miles west of Sacramento, where he had been held since December of 2010.

"The news of Gregory Powell's death is a painful reminder that it was 49 years ago that we lost Officer Ian Campbell," Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said in a statement.

"In many respects, Officer Campbell's murder in the spring of 1963 has served as a painful reminder of just how dangerous this job truly is day in and day out for all officers."

Campbell's partner on the night of the crime, Karl Hettinger, survived after fleeing in the dark onion field from Powell and his accomplice, Jimmy Lee Smith. Hettinger died in 1994 at the age of 59.

Smith was paroled from a California prison in 1982. He died of a heart attack in a county jail in 2007 after being arrested on a parole violation.

According to an LAPD account of the case, Powell and Smith were looking to commit a robbery on March 9, 1963 when they were pulled over for questioning by Campbell and Hettinger in Hollywood.

Powell and Smith were able to disarm the two officers and drove them to the deserted field in Bakersfield, about 100 miles north of Los Angeles. There Powell shot Campbell dead as Hettinger managed to escape and run some four miles to a farmhouse for help.

Powell was arrested that night and Smith the following day. Both men were convicted of murder and sentenced to death but their sentences were commuted to life in prison when California's death penalty was ruled unconstitutional in the following decade.

The crime became the subject of the book "The Onion Field" by author and former Los Angeles Police sergeant Joseph Wambaugh. The book was adapted into a 1979 film starring James Woods as Powell.

According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Powell had been due for release in 1982, but a parole board ordered him kept in prison amid a public furor.

The corrections department said he was denied parole a total of 11 times and rejected for compassionate release, which he opposed, in October of last year.

Construction industry continues to contract ? MyHome.ie Blog

    Construction levels continue to decline

New figures show that the construction industry?s contraction deepened again last month, with both activity and new business falling at faster rates.

The Ulster Bank construction managers index dipped to 42.2 in July from 42.5 in June ? its 62nd month of contraction in a row.

Ulster Bank also noted that the fall was the sharpest since September 2011.

Firms said that weak confidence among customers and poor weather conditions impacted negatively in activity in the sector, which includes housing, commercial and civil engineering.

Of the three monitored sectors, the biggest fall in activity was seen in civil engineering projects, were the rate of contraction was the fastest in four months. Commercial activity also declined at a faster pace than in June, but the pace of reduction in the housing sector slowed to the weakest since January.

Today?s PMI shows that Irish building companies cut their workforces again in July, as they have been doing since May 2007. Ulster Bank noted that the pace of reduction was the strongest in six months.

Strong competition and falling demand lead to the seventh successive fall in new orders at Irish construction firms. The fall was the sharpest since February 2010.

However, input costs fell in July, ending a 26 month sequence of inflation. Although firms continue to predict a rise in activity over the next 12 months, the level of optimism dropped in July to stand at its weakest level in three months.

?The latest reading of the Ulster Bank Construction PMI paints a downbeat picture of the Irish construction sector as the second half of the year got underway,? commented Ulster Bank?s chief economist Simon Barry.

He said that near-term prospects for the sector do not look encouraging. ?Signs of stabilisation in new orders around the turn of the year have given way to renewed weakness in recent months, in turn dampening hopes for a stabilisation in construction activity levels more broadly,? he said.
