Weather Channel heads to swing states for election

(AP) ? Snowstorms, hurricanes and tornados are what usually put The Weather Channel's news team in motion. This November it will mobilize for the election.

The network, which commissioned a study on how many people might be dissuaded from going to the polls by bad weather, said Wednesday it plans to send some of its meteorologists out into the field on Election Day to monitor the weather's impact on voting.

The study, done in August, found that 25 percent of eligible voters said bad weather would have an impact on their ability or desire to get to the polls on Nov. 6. Among people who said they were undecided between President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney, 35 percent said weather might make a difference in whether they vote.

Obama's supporters should be hoping for clear skies: Twenty-eight percent of people who said they plan to vote for Obama said weather would have a significant or moderate impact on their decisions to vote, while 19 percent of Romney supporters said it would.

Paul Walsh, vice president of weather analytics for The Weather Channel, said he was surprised at the number of people who suggested rain or shine could be the deciding factor in whether they vote, particularly among the undecided voters.

"In a close election, that becomes daunting," Walsh said. "The weather can become a really pivotal thing."

The Weather Channel will base reporters in swing states on Election Day. It will decide closer to the election whether to pre-empt its regular programming, as is often done during major weather stories, said Jennifer Rigby, the network's multimedia content director.

Icy road conditions will affect potential voters more than any other condition, the survey said.

Different weather in different locales also will make a difference, as populations more accustomed to hazardous weather conditions will better be able to shake them off, Walsh said.

"If it's going to snow an inch in Buffalo, that's like a walk in the park," Walsh said. "That's not going to move the needle. But if it snows an inch in New York City, that's going to change a lot of minds."

Asked which of the two candidates they'd prefer to be stranded with in a snowstorm, 54 percent of respondents answered Obama. A majority of voters also said that Obama would be better at providing aid to a city following a hurricane.

The telephone survey was conducted by global market research company Ipsos between Aug. 21 and 24, with 1,683 registered voters participating. Its margin of error was 3 percentage points.

What Type of an Entrepreneur Are You? | Amaru Don TV

Written By?Rishi Anand:

Many entrepreneurs forget that they are NOT defined by their business or businesses. Yes, an entrepreneur owns and operates a business and assumes significant accountability for the inherent risks and the outcome of that enterprise but should that venture start making losses or fail altogether ? the business is ultimately a failure ? not the entrepreneur. But what is the real definition of an entrepreneur and why does it matter what type of an entrepreneur you are?

Tracing back its roots to 1950 our understanding of entrepreneurship owes a lot to the work of Joseph Schumpeter (economist) who defined an entrepreneur as a person willing and able to convert a new idea or invention into a successful innovation. Further in 1959, Cole further defined four distinctive types of entrepreneur:

1)????? The innovator
2)????? The calculating inventor,
3)????? The over-optimistic promoter,
4)????? And finally, the organization builder.

These entrepreneur types are not related to the?personality?of the entrepreneur but more to the type of opportunity the entrepreneur will inevitably be attracted to and the problems that they will face (or so Cole thought).

Nowadays, Cole?s categories, though very applicable are broken down in varying ways, but the main entrepreneurial categories that are agreed upon are:

1) The Lifestyle Entrepreneur:

This is someone who has decided to build a business to make a living and to satisfy his or her own personal motivations. This entrepreneur would like to create a successful company ? but?building a company to be listed on the Nasdaq?would definitely NOT be?a driving force. Instead this entrepreneur would be more?likely to be ??income statement affluent??over any of the other types of Entrepreneurs listed ? and the choice of businesses he or she would choose to be involved with?would generally?be non-scalable, but usually cash generative businesses.

2) The Empire builder:

This particular entrepreneur?would be classed as ?balance sheet affluent?. This entrepreneur buys ? but does not easily?sell, usually stubbornly choosing to go ?long? on all of his investments and business decisions. This Entrepreneur would not really consider selling or exiting from his company, unless it was absolutely essential or involved members of the board physically dragging him/her out of their presidential chair.

3) The Serial Entrepreneur:

It is fair to state that this entrepreneur?s main motivation will be the cash payout on the exit or sale of their venture so that they are able to move on and build their next company. The serial entrepreneur has mixed reviews amongst Angel Investors as they usually have less skin in the game than say an empire builder, however, Angel investors that invest in a serial entrepreneur can leverage their broad experience base and their focus on the businesses trade sale which is in alignment to most angel investor?s investment criteria.

A study published in late 2004 by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business pointed out that entrepreneurs are commonly believed to have special traits that make them successful. For instance, entrepreneurs are commonly seen as being especially skilled at spotting new business opportunities, or they are regarded as brash or aggressive and ready to take greater risks than their peers. However, the study adds, despite a lot of academic study ?no one has been able to identify a truly unique set of entrepreneurial personalities.?

A similar view is proposed by the Center for Bioscience, part of the Higher Education Academy at Leeds University in the UK. ?Increasingly, it is recognized that at least some (and probably the majority) of the skills associated with entrepreneurship, and how to apply them successfully, can be learned,? it says.

Dr Pauric McGowan, Director of the Northern Ireland Center for Entrepreneurship, believes that entrepreneurs are both born and made with some people born with entrepreneurial traits and behaviors. Success depends on developing these traits but also learning skills, such as management skills. He also believes that everyone has the potential to become an entrepreneur and that entrepreneurial traits and skills are useful in well-established businesses, where they can be used to improve, for example, the running of the business.

My personal belief is that entrepreneurialism is not reserved to certain types of individuals only. Instead I truly believe that anyone is capable of being an entrepreneur as long as they are placed into the circumstances that would nurture the need for them to create an environment for themselves in which they can prosper (or not) but?at their own terms.?A common theme amongst successful entrepreneurs seems to be that they ?had no choice in the matter? and that it was through necessity that they had to think and work outside of the box to succeed.

Whatever your personal belief is in this matter, and whether you believe entrepreneurs??are born through nurture or nature, the fact remains that living outside of one?s comfort zone, and having the stomach to do this on a regular basis is key to an entrepreneur?s success especially in the start-up stages of his/her company.?What I also find personally curious is that Coles 1950s distinctive entrepreneur profile types can still be applied to each of the three widely accepted entrepreneurial types above. It?s surprising because even now, almost 60 years on, whilst many elements of our market place and economy have changed, the basic entrepreneurial philosophy has not, and probably never will, for as long as we operate within a ?free capitalist? society.

Primate study adds to evidence of BPA harming human reproduction

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

A Washington State University researcher has found new evidence that the plastic additive BPA can disrupt women's reproductive systems, causing chromosome damage, miscarriages and birth defects.

Writing in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, WSU geneticist Patricia Hunt and colleagues at WSU and the University of California, Davis, report seeing reproductive abnormalities in rhesus monkeys with BPA levels similar to those of humans. By using an animal with the most human-like reproductive system, the research bolsters earlier work by Hunt and others documenting widespread reproductive effects in rodents.

"The concern is exposure to this chemical that we're all exposed to could increase the risk of miscarriages and the risk of babies born with birth defects like Down Syndrome," says Hunt. "The really stunning thing about the effect is we're dosing grandma, it's crossing the placenta and hitting her developing fetus, and if that fetus is a female, it's changing the likelihood that that female is going to ovulate normal eggs. It's a three-for-one hit."

The research also adds to the number of organs affected by BPA, or bisphenol A, which is found in plastic bottles, the linings of aluminum cans and heat-activated cash register receipts. This May, Hunt was part of another paper in PNASreporting that the additive altered mammary development in the primate, increasing the risk of cancer.

Hunt's colleagues at UC, Davis exposed different groups of gestating monkeys to single daily doses of BPA and low-level continuous doses and looked at how they affected the reproductive systems of female fetuses. She saw that in the earliest stage of the adult's egg development, the egg cell failed to divide properly. Earlier mouse studies showed similar disturbances translated into genetic defects in the mature egg.

A fertilized egg with the wrong number of chromosomes will almost always fail to come to term, leading to a spontaneous abortion or progeny with birth defects.

In monkeys exposed continuously, Hunt saw further complications in the third trimester as fetal eggs were not packaged appropriately in follicles, structures in which they develop. Eggs need to be packaged properly to grow, develop and mature.

"That's not good," says Hunt, "because it looks to us like you're just throwing away a huge number of the eggs that a female would have. It raises concerns about whether or not she's going to have a really short reproductive lifespan."

Data Analytics segment most attractive in the Indian KPO sector ...

Data Analytics segment most attractive in the Indian KPO sector

Value Notes

- The analytics segment appears to be the least affected by the global economic slowdown, thus making it more attractive than the other KPO segments

- Revenue of pure-play analytics firms in India increased rapidly at a CAGR of 38% from 2007 to 2011

- MuSigma tops the ValueNotes Service Provider Evaluation Ranking in 2011

The rate at which digital data is being generated today is growing exponentially, to say the least. The world?s installed capacity to store information will reach nearly 100 zettabytes by 2020, if it continues to grow at the current rate, according to a report by Policy Exchange, a UK think tank.

Companies are now extracting value from their big data to gain actionable insights on their competition and business environment. Analytics has evolved tremendously and it is no surprise that it is currently the most attractive segment in the Indian knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) sector, as found by ValueNotes in their latest report.

In the report titled ?Analytics: Financial Performance Review?, ValueNotes analyses the key financial ratios of pure-play KPOs with operations in India, that specifically cater to the analytics segment. ?The analytics segment has stood up to the global economic slowdown remarkably well, and is currently the most attractive segment in the KPO sector,? says Arjun Bhuwalka, Project Manager at ValueNotes. He adds, ?The revenue of the companies, analysed in this report, increased rapidly at a CAGR of 38% from 2007 to 2011. For firms to capitalize on this high growth market, taking early steps to improve their financials will have a positive result in the long term.?

Financial indicators show that in 2007, the pure-play analytics companies in India urgently needed to take measures to improve their profitabilty and overall performance. Since then, these companies have successfully improved their financial performance despite the poor economic environment. These improvements peaked in 2010 but corrected to an extent in 2011 raising the question of whether the current performance is sustainable.

Rising operating costs reigned in, but cost pressures still exist

Operating cost increased till 2008, which resulted in a downward pressure on operating margins. Operating cost as a percentage of revenue increased to a high of 99% in 2008 and as a result, EBIT margins turned negative. Since then, companies have tightened their operating expenses.

Top-5 players in the analytics segment in 2011

MuSigma has topped the Service Provider Evaluation ranking in 2011 and shown strong financial credentials across parameters. The company represents the financial performance needed by firms in the industry in the current situation. They have the highest reported revenue, backed with industry leading margins and high returns to its shareholders. Other companies that have stood out for their financial performance are Fractal Analytics, ActiveCubes, Manthan, and Vehere.

ValueNotes is a leading provider of research-based business intelligence.

Adjuvant Chemotherapy With FOLFOX for Primary Colorectal - JSurg

Adjuvant Chemotherapy With FOLFOX for Primary Colorectal Cancer Is Associated With Increased Somatic Gene Mutations and Inferior Survival in Patients Undergoing Hepatectomy for Metachronous Liver Metastases.

Ann Surg. 2012 Sep 10;

Authors: Andreou A, Kopetz S, Maru DM, Chen SS, Zimmitti G, Brouquet A, Shindoh J, Curley SA, Garrett C, Overman MJ, Aloia TA, Vauthey JN

Abstract

OBJECTIVE:: We hypothesized that metachronous colorectal liver metastases (CLM) have different biology after failure of oxaliplatin (FOLFOX) compared to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) or no chemotherapy for adjuvant treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC). BACKGROUND:: It is unclear whether patients treated with liver resection for metachronous CLM after adjuvant FOLFOX for CRC have worse outcomes than those who received 5-FU or no chemotherapy. METHODS:: We identified 341 patients who underwent hepatectomy for metachronous CLM (disease-free interval ?12 months, 1993-2010). Mass-spectroscopy genotyping for somatic gene mutations in CLM was performed in a subset of 129 patients. RESULTS:: Adjuvant treatment for primary CRC was FOLFOX in 77 patients, 5-FU in 169 patients, and no chemotherapy in 95 patients. Node-positive primary was comparable between FOLFOX and 5-FU but lower in the no-chemotherapy group (P < 0.0001). Median metastasis size was smaller in the FOLFOX group (2.5 cm) than in the 5-FU (3.0 cm) or no-chemotherapy (3.5 cm) groups, (P = 0.008) although prehepatectomy chemotherapy utilization, metastases number, and carcinoembryonic antigen levels were similar. Disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) rates after hepatectomy were worse in patients treated with adjuvant FOLFOX [DFS at 3 years: 14% vs 38% (5-FU) vs 45% (no-chemo), OS at 3 years: 58% vs 70% (5-FU) vs 84% (no-chemo)]. On multivariate analysis, adjuvant FOLFOX was associated with worse DFS (P < 0.0001) and OS (P < 0.0001). Mutation analysis revealed ?1 mutations in 57% of patients (27/47) after FOLFOX, 29% (12/41) after 5-FU, and 32% (13/41) after no chemotherapy (P = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS:: Adjuvant FOLFOX for primary CRC is associated with a high rate of somatic mutations in liver metastases and inferior outcomes after hepatectomy for metachronous CLM.

China filmmakers should focus on domestic market: Chen

TORONTO, Sept 15 ? Internationally acclaimed Chinese filmmaker Chen Kaige, citing a ?big cultural gap? between the East and West that makes foreign markets harder to crack, on Tuesday urged his compatriots to make movies first for China?s box office.

China?s domestic market ?is big and it?s important to satisfy the Chinese audience first, just like Hollywood films (are) made first for American audiences, not really international audiences,? Chen (picture) said at a press conference at the Toronto International Film Festival.

?I don?t think there is a need for all Chinese-speaking films to be shown abroad,? he said, urging Chinese filmmakers to focus on ?the domestic market first.?

The director of the Oscar-nominated movie ?Farewell my Concubine? (1993), the first Chinese film to win a Palme d?Or at Cannes, is arguably in a strong position to promote Chinese films abroad and many Chinese expect that of him.

?The problem is that there is still quite a big cultural gap between East and West,? he told reporters. ?I?m not sure that Western audiences are that interested in films made in the East, honestly.?

Similarly, Chinese audiences are ?not interested? in movies made in Canada, or the United States or elsewhere. ?They?ll say, ?I?m not interested, I can?t relate to those characters, and so on.? That shows that the culture difference is quite big.?

Chen?s comments shocked proponents of exporting Chinese culture and put him at odds with a growing trend of international cooperation on financing, production and distribution of films.

Hollywood and Bollywood, the world?s largest movie industries, for example, in 2010 signed a landmark pact to boost cooperation for producing and distributing their films.

This has fuelled a swell of cross-border co-productions and star-swaps that led Bollywood superstar Anil Kapoor last year to say he ?feels more alive? after starting fresh in Hollywood.

Chen, who switches between English and Mandarin with ease, last came to Toronto with his film ?Together? in 2002, and is now back to seek international distribution for his new thriller ?Caught in the Web.?

The prescient fable about the dangers of cyber-bullying and online voyeurism has already been theatrically released in China and was scheduled to premiere internationally in Toronto on Wednesday.

The Toronto film festival, which runs through September 16, is the biggest in North America and has traditionally been a key event for Oscar-conscious studios and distributors.

?Caught in the Web? was a smash hit in China. Chen however is ambiguous about its potential to win over North American audiences, despite positive reviews.

The film opens with a beautiful young woman, Ye Lanqiu (Gao Yuanyuan) who has been diagnosed with advanced lymphatic cancer.

Numb with shock and hiding behind dark sunglasses, she is oblivious to goings-on around her on a crowded city bus and fails to register the conductor?s persistent request that she give up her seat for an elderly pensioner.

A short video of the incident taken by another passenger goes viral, triggering a massive hate-mail campaign against the already stricken Lanqiu, turning her into a public pariah.

Chen said he made the movie to capture the dramatic changes shaping China, such as the introduction of citizen journalism.

?We don?t see (many films) about the changes taking place in China,? he lamented. ?That?s why I wanted to do this film. It brings a very interesting new image of China and also a new message from a very complex situation there.? ? AFP/Relaxnews

The Relationship Between Perceived Organizational Support and ...

The present research examines how the social identity perspective contributes to a better understanding of the relationships between perceived organizational support, affective commitment, and employees? performance at work. Using a sample of 253 employees from an engineering company, Study 1 found that organizational identification partially mediates the relationship between perceived organizational support and affective commitment. The results of Study 1 also indicated that the relationship between perceived organizational support and organizational identification is moderated by organizational prestige. In Study 2, using a sample of 179 postal employees, the authors replicated the mediating role of organizational identification in the relationship between perceived organizational support and affective commitment and found that affective commitment mediates the relationship between organizational identification and supervisor?s ratings of extra-role performance.

Maingear outfits desktops with GeForce GTX 650 and 660, drops prices to lure us in

Maingear F131, Potenza and Shift

Whenever there's a new video card or processor, Maingear is almost always on the scene with an upgrade -- sometimes within seconds of its hardware partners. A plan to use NVIDIA's new GeForce GTX 650 and 660 graphics chips from day one proves that rule in style, although Maingear is going the distance with some incentives beyond just shiny parts. Along with making the mid-tier GeForce technology an option for every desktop, the PC builder is offering special GTX 650 and 660 versions of its F131 and Potenza gaming rigs that knock as much as $150 off the price. The base prices of $949 for the limited-run Potenza and $1,199 for the F131 keep either system in serious gamer territory and preclude us from calling them tremendous bargains. Nonetheless, it's difficult to grouse very loudly: it's not often that a price drop and a hardware upgrade walk hand in hand.

AT&T clearly doesn't want to keep me as a customer

Until now, AT&T has always made exceptions for early iPhone adopters by qualifying these customers for full upgrade prices before their contract technically allowed it. I took advantage of this when upgrading from the iPhone 3G to iPhone 3GS, from iPhone 3GS to iPhone 4, and from iPhone 4 to iPhone 4S. Not this year. Not for the iPhone 5. Those glorious days are now over.

I learned today that my account is only eligible for "early upgrade" pricing, which is $250 more than "full upgrade" pricing. So a 16 GB iPhone 5 will cost me $450 instead of $200. Ouch.

Before learning of this fact, I was already considering making the switch to Verizon because AT&T LTE is not yet available in my area. I was hesitant, however, because of expensive early termination fees (ETFs). Well, it turns out that the ETF for my line on AT&T is $215. Let's do some basic math.

If I stay with AT&T and purchase a 16 GB iPhone 5, it's going to cost me $450. If I cancel my account with AT&T, I will have to pay an ETF of $215 then purchase the 16 GB iPhone 5 on Verizon for $200. So ultimately, the cost to switch to Verizon is $415 (upgrade fees and activation fees aside).

So for $450 I can stay on AT&T with no LTE, or for $415 I can switch to Verizon and gain LTE. This is a no-brainer.

When I contacted AT&T PR, I was told that there hasn't been a change in policies and the ineligibly of full upgrade pricing is likely due to the fact that it's only been 11 months since the release of the iPhone 4S.

We want to help customers upgrade to a new device as quickly as possible ? exact timing can depend on several factors unique to each account (length of contract, payment history, etc.).

What is AT&T thinking? Why did they choose this to be the year to stop their early upgrades for iPhone customers? I understand that the timing of the iPhone 5 may be playing a role, but why not make an exception by 1 month? This is the year that the iPhone supports LTE and it's no secret that Verizon offers much more LTE coverage than AT&T. Because of this, Verizon is very tempting for current AT&T customers, but ETFs are expensive and typically incentive enough for most customers to stay -- providing that the cost of the iPhone is the same on both carriers. Instead, AT&T has decided to stop early upgrades, making it cheaper for their existing customers to cancel and switch to Verizon. If both the ETF and the upgrade price are meant to offset my subsidy, why aren't these values equal to each other?

When I informed the AT&T representitve of all of the above, she put me on hold to see if she could get an exception made for me, but returned empty-handed. I told her that my decision to switch to Verizon was now an easy one and she replied with "well, it was great having you as a loyal customer for the time that we did". Yeah, ok.

Seriously, does AT&T even want to keep their customers? There is literally no reason for me to stay with AT&T -- and as a very loyal customer who has been with AT&T since I was 16 years old (and it was Cingular Wireless), it's time to give Verizon a shot.

Green Blog: On the Fate of Asia's Great Rivers

A new report from the National Research Council, a group that advises the United States government, brings some sobriety to the oft-heated discussion about melting Himalayan glaciers.

Interest in the glaciers intensified in 2010 when the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the United Nations body that publishes periodic summaries of climate science, acknowledged an error in its 2007 report. One paragraph had said in reference to the Himalayan glaciers that ?the likelihood of them disappearing by the year 2035 and perhaps sooner is very high.? After New Scientist magazine questioned this claim in 2010, the I.P.C.C. said the paragraph was based on poor information.

The new report, published on Wednesday, concludes that glaciers in the eastern and central regions of the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau are indeed melting, at accelerating rates, while those in the western part of the region are in better shape. However, over at least the next few decades, melting glaciers are not likely to be the main factor influencing water availability at lower elevations, the panel concluded.

A statement accompanying the report said that ?shifts in the location, intensity and variability of both rain and snow will likely have a greater impact on regional water supplies than glacier retreat will.? My colleague Vikas Bajaj, for instance, recently outlined the effect that shifts in the annual monsoon are having on Indian agriculture. He followed up on that report by answering questions and laying out possible solutions to India?s water problems.

The question of future water supply in this region is of profound importance. The Himalayan glaciers are the headwaters of many of the big river systems in Asia ? the Ganges, the Mekong and the Yantze rivers, for instance ? and those rivers in turn are a major component of a hydrologic system that supplies drinking and irrigation water. The rivers are thus vital to the welfare of about 1.5 billion people, or more than 20 percent of the world?s population.

While discounting fears of a near-term crisis precipitated by glacial melt, the National Research Council report also warned of potential long-term risks associated with the climatic warming of the region.

?Many basins in the region are ?water-stressed? due to both social changes and environmental factors, and this stress is projected to intensify? with growing populations, the summary statement said. ?Climate change could exacerbate this stress in the future.?

Scientists discover how an out-of-tune protein leads to muscle demise in heart failure

A new Johns Hopkins study has unraveled the changes in a key cardiac protein that can lead to heart muscle malfunction and precipitate heart failure.

Troponin I, found exclusively in heart muscle, is already used as the gold-standard marker in blood tests to diagnose heart attacks, but the new findings reveal why and how the same protein is also altered in heart failure. Scientists have known for a while that several heart proteins ? troponin I is one of them ? get "out of tune" in patients with heart failure, but up until now, the precise origin of the "bad notes" remained unclear.

The discovery, published online ahead of print on Sept. 12 in the journal Circulation, can pave the way to new ? and badly needed ? diagnostic tools and therapies for heart failure, a condition marked by heart muscle enlargement and inefficient pumping, and believed to affect more than 6 million adults in the United States, the researchers say.

Troponin I acts as an on-off switch in regulating heart relaxation and contraction and, in response to, adrenaline ? the "flight-fight" response. But when altered, troponin I can start acting as a dimmer switch instead, one that ever so subtly modulates cardiac muscle function and reduces the heart's ability to pump efficiently and fill with blood, the researchers found.

The Hopkins team used a novel method to pinpoint the exact sites, or epicenters, along the protein's molecule where disease-triggering changes occur. They found 14 such sites, six of them previously unknown. In revealing new details about the molecular sequence of events leading up to heart failure, the researchers said their work may spark the development of tests that better predict disease risk and monitor progression once the heart begins to fail.

"Our findings pinpoint the exact sites on troponin I's molecule where disease-causing activity occurs, and in doing so they give us new targets for treatment," says researcher Jennifer Van Eyk, Ph.D., director of the Johns Hopkins Proteomics Innovation Center in Heart Failure.

In the current study, the team analyzed tissue from the hearts of patients with end-stage heart failure and from deceased healthy heart donors. The 14 sites the researchers identified are sites where troponin I binds with phosphate, a process known as phosphorylation. Phosphate can activate or deactivate many enzymes, thus altering the function of a protein and, in the case of heart failure, ignite disease. The six newly identified sites represent new "hot spots" involved in heart contraction, the researchers say, and could be used as diagnostic markers or a target for treatment to restore function. The Hopkins researchers found that in some sections of the molecule, phosphorylation ratcheted up the dimmer switch, while ratcheting it down in other sections, but it invariably led to muscle dysfunction.

"Our goal would be to zero in on these new sites, gauge risk of heart failure and, hopefully, restore heart muscle function," Van Eyk says.

Heart failure is a complex progressive disorder, and while cardiac pacemakers can restore or "resynchronize" heart function in many people, about one-third of patients do not improve even with pacemaker therapy in addition to standard medication treatments.

"This is a devastating disorder for which we desperately need new and less invasive therapies," says senior investigator Anne Murphy, M.D., a cardiologist at Johns Hopkins Children's Center.

In their analysis, the researchers used a novel technique, called multiple-reaction monitoring (MRM), which pinpoints the exact locations along the protein's molecule where faulty signaling occurs and disrupts heart muscle function. MRM is an ultra-sensitive type of mass spectrometry that measures the exact size and chemical composition of protein fragments. Phosphorylated protein fragments have different molecular weights than non-phosphorylated ones. In this way, MRM accurately homes in on sites where phosphate is bound to troponin I to modulate heart muscle function.

The researchers found that patients with heart failure had markedly different levels of phosphorylation in certain protein segments compared with healthy heart muscle.

The advantage of MRM analysis ? one of the first non-antibody based troponin I tests ? is that it can measure phosphorylation levels without the need for antibodies, the traditional method currently used to monitor heart muscle function. The researchers believe that MRM can be developed as a clinical diagnostic test, and the Hopkins team is already working to develop a test that would measure phosphorlyation levels of proteins in the blood and would allow physicians to monitor the progression of the disease as well as predict which heart attack patients will progress to heart failure. About one-third of them do so.

"Right now, we don't really know which heart attacks patients will develop heart failure and which ones will maintain normal heart muscle function," Murphy says. "Monitoring specific phosphorylation sites might be one way to help us foresee and forestall this complication on an individual patient basis."

Voter ID Laws Revisited & What To Know About Gap Insurance

Click HERE To Listen: 09-12-12 Paul Samakow

Paul and Andy talked the entire time about photo Voter ID laws.? Paul related opposite results in cases in Texas and Pennsylvania.? In the Texas case, a Federal Court blocked that state?s law requiring photo ID?s, indicating the law placed an unfair burden on the poor, thus, adversely affecting minorities, African American and Hispanic individuals, who most often are among that lower economic class.? In contrast, in Pennsylvania, a court ruled that the prospect of the same type of law was not discriminatory, and that fears of problems on Election Day did not justify overruling the law.

The topic has been discussed before here, and Andy reiterated his thoughts that it would be a simple fix, just go get a photo ID. Paul offered that doing that might not always be so easy, because of cost.? Paul offered that he felt the states should pay for the cost. Andy agreed.

This topic will continue as one of significant importance right up until the election.

Paul?s tip of the day involved automobile GAP insurance.? To find out what it is and why you should have it, listen to the segment.

Where to trade in your old iPhone

2 hrs.

You were happy enough with your iPhone 4S until today, when the new iPhone 5 was announced. What to do? Trade it in, of course, if you must have the new one.

Gazelle and NextWorth are among the larger trade-in services for consumers.

Gazelle?offers a 30-day price lock. So, if you get a quote today, that price is set for the next 30 days and will not drop, as it will with some other trade-in sites. The other plus is that it lets you hang onto your old phone until you get the new one.?

A spokesman for Gazelle told NBC News Wednesday that in the last month, the site has seen a "more than 600 percent increase in iPhones traded in," compared to the month before last year's launch of the iPhone 4S.

"In the past few weeks,?Gazelle has seen record volume, including one full week in which we were presenting one iPhone offer every second," the spokesman said. "Gazelle's volume last week was about five?times the volume of the week prior to the iPhone announcement last year."

What happens to prices after the actual announcement of the new iPhone?

"It appears that we saw about a 25 percent?decline in prices in the first week after the announcement and a steady decline over a 3- to?4-week period," he said.

Gazelle, like most other sites, will even take the earliest iPhone, which came out in 2007, in trade (Gazelle calls it the "iPhone Classic"). But don't get your hopes up or plan that trip to Vegas yet: an 8 GB original iPhone in "good" condition will only get you 9 bucks (as of today). If it's in "flawless" condition (hard to believe after more than five years), you'd get $19.

Some examples of?NextWorth's pricing for the iPhone 4S, according to figures it gave NBC News Wednesday, as the iPhone 5 was being announced:?$280 for AT&T's 16GB model; $350 for its?64 GB version; $245 for Verizon and Sprint's?16 GB version; $300 for their?64 GB iPhone 4S.

There's also eBay Instant Sale?as a trade-in option.?It's faster and easier than regular eBay auctions. You enter the info about your iPhone, get a quote, and if you like it, ship it to eBay ? they pay for shipping ? and you are paid via PayPal.

Todd?Witkemper, an eBay spokesman, said there is a "limited time" offer, through Sept. 19, where the iPhone and certain other smartphones, will be offered what the site considers top dollar ? "up to" $300 for the iPhone 4S, 16 GB AT&T version and "up to" $400 for the 64 GB model. As always, be sure to check around and compare prices.

Since Sept. 1, eBay Instant Sale has "generated more than 300,000 smartphone trade-in offers for customers looking to view the trade-in value of their devices,"?Witkemper said in a statement. "Of those trade-in offers, 34 percent were for Android devices, 30 percent were for iOS devices, 27 percent were for BlackBerry devices and 9 percent?were for smartphones running other operating systems."

You can also use Apple's?recycling program, which will give you an Apple-only gift card for your older?iPhone.?As AP's Barbara Ortutay noted, a?32 GB iPhone 4S "with some light scratches but in good working condition was recently estimated at $280. That's higher than Gazelle, but you'll have to spend the money at Apple."

And, if you're not looking to score a new iPhone, but want the ever-so-slightly-now old iPhone 4S, Apple is selling a 16 GB version of it for $99. A?two-year-old iPhone 4 with 8 GB Apple says, can be had "for free with a two-year contract," depending on the carrier.?

2012 Democratic National Convention: Remarks as Prepared for Delivery by The Honorable Deval Patrick, Governor of Massachusetts

CHARLOTTE, Sept. 4, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is a transcript of a speech, as prepared for delivery, by The Honorable Deval Patrick, Governor of Massachusetts, at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, September 4, 2012:

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120720/MM44058LOGO )

Good evening, Democrats! Are you fired up? Are you ready to go? I hope so.

This is the election of a lifetime. Because more than any one candidate or policy, what's at stake is the American dream. That dream?the ability to imagine a better way for ourselves and our families and then reach for it?is central to who we are and what we stand for as a nation. Whether that dream endures for another generation depends on you and me. It depends on who leads us, too.

In Massachusetts, we know Mitt Romney. By the time he left office, Massachusetts was 47th in the nation in job creation?during better economic times?and household income in our state was declining. He cut education deeper than anywhere else in America. Roads and bridges were crumbling. Business taxes were up, and business confidence was down. Our clean energy potential was stalled. And we had a structural budget deficit. Mitt Romney talks a lot about all the things he's fixed. I can tell you that Massachusetts wasn't one of them. He's a fine fellow and a great salesman, but as governor he was more interested in having the job than doing it.

When I came to office, we set out on a different course: investing in ourselves and our future. And today Massachusetts leads the nation in economic competitiveness, student achievement, health care coverage, life sciences and biotech, energy efficiency and veterans' services. Today, with the help of the Obama administration, we are rebuilding our roads and bridges and expanding broadband access. Today we're out of the deficit hole Mr. Romney left, and we've achieved the highest bond rating in our history. Today?with labor at the table?we've made the reforms in our pension and benefits systems, our schools, our transportation system and more that Mr. Romney only talked about. And today in Massachusetts, you can also marry whomever you love. We have much more still to do. But we are on a better track because we placed our faith not in trickle-down fantasies and divisive rhetoric but in our values and common sense.

The same choice faces the nation today. All that today's Republicans are saying is that if we just shrink government, cut taxes, crush unions and wait, all will be well. Never mind that those are the very policies that got us into recession to begin with! Never mind that not one of the governors who preached that gospel in Tampa last week has the results to show for it. But we Democrats owe America more than a strong argument for what we are against. We need to be just as strong about what we are for.

The question is: What do we believe? We believe in an economy that grows opportunity out to the middle class and the marginalized, not just up to the well connected. We believe that freedom means keeping government out of our most private affairs, including out of a woman's decision whether to keep an unwanted pregnancy and everybody's decision about whom to marry. We believe that we owe the next generation a better country than we found and that every American has a stake in that. We believe that in times like these we should turn to each other, not on each other. We believe that government has a role to play, not in solving every problem in everybody's life but in helping people help themselves to the American dream. That's what Democrats believe.

If we want to win elections in November and keep our country moving forward, if we want to earn the privilege to lead, it's time for Democrats to stiffen our backbone and stand up for what we believe. Quit waiting for pundits or polls or super PACs to tell us who the next president or senator or congressman is going to be. We're Americans.

We shape our own future. Let's start by standing up for President Barack Obama.

This is the president who delivered the security of affordable health care to every single American after 90 years of trying. This is the president who brought Osama bin Laden to justice, who ended the war in Iraq and is ending the war in Afghanistan. This is the president who ended "don't ask, don't tell" so that love of country, not love of another, determines fitness for military service. Who made equal pay for equal work the law of the land. This is the president who saved the American auto industry from extinction, the American financial industry from self-destruction, and the American economy from depression. Who added over 4.5 million private sector jobs in the last two-plus years, more jobs than George W. Bush added in eight.

The list of accomplishments is long, impressive and barely told?even more so when you consider that congressional Republicans have made obstruction itself the centerpiece of their governing strategy. With a record and a vision like that, I will not stand by and let him be bullied out of office?and neither should you, and neither should you and neither should you.

What's at stake is real. The Orchard Gardens Elementary School in Boston was in trouble. Its record was poor, its spirit was broken, and its reputation was a wreck. No matter how bad things were in other urban schools in the city, people would say, "At least we're not Orchard Gardens." ?Today, thanks to a host of new tools, many enacted with the help of the Obama administration, Orchard Gardens is turning itself around. Teaching standards and accountabilities are higher. The school day is longer and filled with experiential learning, art, exercise and music.

The head of pediatric psychology from a local hospital comes to consult with faculty and parents on the toughest personal situations in students' home lives. Attendance is up, thanks to a mentoring initiative. In less than a year, Orchard Gardens went from one of the worst schools in the district to one of the best in the state. The whole school community is engaged and proud.

So am I. At the end of my visit a year and a half ago, the first grade?led by a veteran teacher?gathered to recite Dr. King's "I have a dream" speech. When I started to applaud, the teacher said, "not yet."? Then she began to ask those six- and seven-year-olds questions: ?"What does 'creed' mean?" "What does 'nullification' mean?"? "Where is Stone Mountain?"? And as the hands shot up, I realized that she had taught the children not just to memorize that speech but to understand it.

Today's Republicans and their nominee for president tell us that those first-graders are on their own?on their own to deal with their poverty; with ill-prepared young parents, maybe who speak English as a second language; with an underfunded school; with neighborhood crime and blight; with no access to nutritious food and no place for their mom to cash a paycheck; with a job market that needs skills they don't have; with no way to pay for college.

But those Orchard Gardens kids should not be left on their own. Those children are America's children, too, yours and mine. And among them are the future scientists, entrepreneurs, teachers, artists, engineers, laborers and civic leaders we desperately need. For this country to rise, they must rise?and they and their cause must have a champion in the White House.

That champion is Barack Obama. That cause is the American dream. Let's fight for that. Let's canvass and phone bank and get out the vote for that. Let's go tell everyone we meet that, when the American dream is at stake, you want Barack Obama in charge.

Thank you. God bless you. And God bless the United States.

Dispatches From the Democratic National Convention

I'm glad you made it safely to Charlotte.?Now we wait for the rain. The president is scheduled to speak in the elements at the Bank of America stadium on Thursday. Since I got here Saturday, it has rained every afternoon. Rain is predicted on Thursday as well. Hurricane Isaac didn't disrupt the Republican National Convention, but summer storms may interfere with the president's outdoor moment. (In fact, moments ago I got a flash flood warning on my phone.) You're not allowed to bring umbrellas to the stadium, so prudent attendees should probably dress like they do on Deadliest Catch.

The Obama team also seems to have been unprepared for other things that were as predictable as summer rainstorms in North Carolina. Over the weekend they appeared to be caught off-guard by the are-you-better-off question. No one could say "Yes!" and leave it at that. This isn't news, of course. The president is up for re-election in a sluggish economy, so this was always going to be a hard question. Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley answered "no," which was a little farther in the wrong direction than the Obama folks wanted to go. It's a hard balance to maintain. No Obama surrogate wants to seem out of step with voters who think things aren't better. The majority of responses from the Obama camp were that progress is slow, but at least we're not where we were, which was negative growth and hundreds of thousands of jobs lost each month.?Things are better, just not much and certainly not as much as Obama promised. This will be the balancing act that everyone will be trying to maintain all week: Optimistic enough about current conditions to make Obama worth re-electing but not so sanguine that they seem clueless. This has been the issue for the last many months, but when you get everyone in town and ask them the same question you're bound to get different answers. We'll be certain to have this conversation on Friday when the new jobs numbers come out.?

So what is this week going to be about? Choice. You may have heard that before. It's not a referendum. To the extent Obama talks about the past, he'll talk about the hard calls he made despite the fact that they were unpopular. This is what Romney and Ryan say they'll do: take on hard choices. Obama of course has, with the car bailout and health care reform. The political pain he has felt is part of what the Romney team has been avoiding: the pain that comes from offering specifics. So, just as the Romney team wants bravery points for deeds yet done (just don't focus on the details), Obama wants bravery points for deeds done (just don't focus on the details). The main argument though, will be about the future. The president will argue that Romney represents policies of the past and that he represents policies for an enduring future.

They're promising specifics. This is where they'll draw a contrast to Romney. I can see how that might work, just as long as the specifics are comfortable ones. There will no doubt be talk about student loans and help with housing and worker retraining and other programs that help people who are hurting. There will be stories of those who have struggled and gotten back up on their feet. The message will be that Obama has a salve for what ails you. Will we hear any talk about shrinking government in a time of scarce resources? Probably not much, I would imagine. Why throw a wet blanket on everything? The weather is already preparing to do that.
