Touch Your Philodendron and Control Your Computer: Technology ...

A yucca plant might make your office desk look nice, but with a new technology developed at Disney Research, Pittsburgh, that little shrub could possibly control your computer. And the jade plant nearby? Put your hand close to it and your iPod could start playing your favorite tunes.

Any houseplant ? real or artificial ? could control a computer or any digital device with this technology, called Botanicus Interactus. Once a single wire is placed anywhere in the plant?s soil, the technology can detect if and where a plant is touched, or even if someone gets near the plant.

Disney researchers will demonstrate an interactive garden of real and artificial plants at SIGGRAPH Emerging Technology, Aug. 5-9 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Turning a houseplant into a device for interacting with computers and digital media no longer seems all that strange, contends Ivan Poupyrev, senior research scientist at Disney Research, Pittsburgh.

?Computing is rapidly fusing with our dwelling places and, thanks to touchpads and Microsoft Kinect, interaction with computers is increasingly tactile and gestural,? he explained. ?Still, this interaction is limited to computing devices. We wondered ? what if a broad variety of everyday objects around us could interact with us??

Botanicus Interactus is built upon capacitive touch sensing, the same principle underlying the touchscreens used in most smartphones. But instead of sensing electrical signals at a single frequency like the typical touchscreen, this technology uses Swept Frequency Capacitive Sensing (SFCS) technique to monitor capacitive signals across a broad range of frequencies. This makes it possible to detect not only if the plant is being touched, but to estimate where and how the plant is being touched. Machine-learning algorithms are used to recognize frequency changes associated with touches in particular locations on the plant.

?Giving plants a voice, a possibility to respond and engage us, could lead to new forms of entertainment, enhance our lifestyles and create a new computational platform that could be used for both education and entertainment,? Poupyrev said. ?In a sense, we are creating a new ?species? of plant that we call Botanicus Interactus.?

In addition to Poupyrev, developers of this new technology include Philipp Schoessler of the Berlin University of the Arts, Jonas Loh of Studio NAND, Germany, and Munehiko Sato of the University of Tokyo. Christian Riekoff and the studio TheGreenEyl joined Disney Research on designing and producing the SIGGRAPH exhibition.

Cold fusion chemist Martin Fleischmann dies

NEW YORK?? British chemist Martin Fleischmann, who stunned the world by announcing that he had achieved nuclear fusion in a glass bottle, has died after a long illness. He was 85.

His son Nicholas said he died Friday at his home in Tisbury, England. He had suffered from Parkinson's disease for many years.

Fleischmann was one of the world's leading electrochemists when he and partner Stanley Pons proclaimed in 1989 that they had sparked fusion, the nuclear process that heats the sun, in an experiment at the University of Utah.

The reaction they reported occurred at room temperature and appeared to give off little radiation, an enormous contrast to the still-ongoing quest to harness fusion by conventional means, in billion-dollar reactors at temperatures of millions of degrees.

The announcement in Salt Lake City raised the hope of a shortcut to fusion as a clean, renewable and cheap energy source. But when other scientists rushed to replicate the achievement, most failed, and "cold fusion" was quickly labeled junk science. Physicists accused Fleischmann of incompetence and fraud.

He and Pons continued to work on ?and defend? their findings, but they were disheartened by the way their work was ignored by scientists after the debacle of 1989.

"This has been a terrible experience," Fleischmann told German news site Telepolis in 2005.

Research on "cold fusion" persists on the fringes of the scientific world.

Fleischmann was born in Czechoslovakia. When the Nazis occupied the country in 1938, the family fled to England. To gain legal status for the move, Fleischmann was adopted by a British bachelor.

He studied chemistry at the Imperial College in London, and became known for a strong grasp of mathematics and an imagination unusual for a chemist. He took over the chemistry department of the University of Southampton in 1967 and gave it an international reputation. He was a fellow of the Royal Society, Britain's Academy of Sciences.

After retiring from the university, he spent a lot of time in Salt Lake City, collaborating on experiments with his friend Pons, an American. Together, they decided to revive an idea Fleischmann had years ago. He had speculated that something interesting, perhaps a nuclear reaction, could be achieved by taking advantage of the peculiar behavior of hydrogen atoms infused in palladium, a precious metal.

Fleischmann was an "exploratory genius," said Michael Melich, a friend of Fleischmann and a research professor of physics at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif.

Golf: Rashid Khan leads by four strokes

Bangalore, Aug 7

Rashid Khan of Delhi fired a five-under-67 in extremely windy and overcast conditions to take the clubhouse lead in round one of the PGTI Players Championship presented by Prestige Golfshire Club, here Tuesday.

Six golfers out of 125 could not finish their rounds as play was suspended due to fading light. The Bangalore duo of Anirban Lahiri and Abhishek Jha were tied second at one-under-71 along with Sri Lankan Anura Rohana.

Rashid Khan came out firing on all cylinders. He bogeyed the second, but birdied six of the last 10 holes. He chipped-in for birdie on the ninth and followed that up with an excellent approach shot from 140 yards to set up another birdie on the 12th.

Khan, the Asian Games silver medalist, added four more birdies on the 13th, 14th, 16thand 17th while sinking a 20-footer on the 14thand 15-footer on the 17th.

"I've been working on my swing for the last two weeks and that has paid off. One needs to control the shots here and therefore I did not use my driver but instead laid-up with irons. I hit 16 regulations today and did well to avoid the rough.

"The conditions were tough due to the wind and the lines on the greens are difficult to read, but I'm thrilled with the start I've made despite all these factors," said the 21-year-old Khan.

Local lad Lahiri, fresh from his dream debut at the British Open last month, made five birdies and four bogeys to be four strokes off the lead in joint second place.

Lahiri said: "I hit it extremely well, but had a poor run with the putter. I missed five putts inside six feet. I could've shot a three to four under today with some consistent putting.

"The highlight of my round was sinking a 25-footer for birdie from just off the green on the second. I have to convert all my opportunities since scoring is going to be tough over the next three days."

Abhishek Jha and Anura Rohana were also joint second as they had a good hitting day and kept the ball in play. Both Jha and Rohana made four birdies and three bogeys.

Keshav Kapoor of Delhi made a hole-in-one on the sixth, but shot a nine-over-81 to be tied 74th.

Here's another connection between Mayor Vince Gray, who is under fire for getting elected with the help of an alleged off-the-books shadow campaign, and former President Bill Clinton, who was under fire for fooling around with an intern and lying about it.?The AP has the scoop that Gray's chief of staff, Chris Murphy, recently met with Judy Smith, a crisis-management expert who advised Monica Lewinsky and inspired the television drama Scandal. D.C. Chamber of Commerce President Barbara Lang helped put the two in touch, the AP reports.

Murphy and Smith corresponded by email later in June and set up a breakfast meeting for July 11, in the middle of what turned out to be a tumultuous week for the mayor. On July 10, the mayor's longtime friend Eugenia "Jeanne" Clarke Harris pleaded guilty to conspiracy and obstruction charges and admitted her role in the shadow campaign.

Smith, old-timers may recall, is no stranger to District politics. She was U.S. Attorney Jay Stephens' spokeswoman during former Mayor-for-life Marion Barry's drug trial.
